Necronom performs doom metal. Admittedly, a strong argument can be made that they perform death metal — this isn’t the kind of release which is easily pigeonholed. However, the focus on creating a sense of sadness with appropriate atmospheric effects rather than balls-out aggression and a noticeable lack of speed suggest a closer link with doom metal then with death metal. Necronom’s crunchy post-industrial guitar sound is quite unusual for an album of this nature. This, along with the ambitions underlying this album (this is the second release in a planned trilogy of albums — the first was _Exordium) as well as the use of distinctive atmospherics ensures that Necronom manage to create their own characteristic sound — innovation is always something to be welcomed. A truly excellent release.

“DARKTHRONE with keyboards” only NECRONOM have better production and mostly, they play in a mid tempo area.
Those five tracks are not easy to describe. Fans of archaic Black Metal can check this out.

A Darkening Path ranges from old Paradise Lost to old My Dying Bride in terms of its obvious influences. I am sure they also have a heavy helping of goth in here, but not being into goth, I couldn’t tell you who appears here in spirit. The guitar sound is very much in the vein of the first two Paradise Lost albums, as are the vocals. The vocals, however, while reminiscent of Nick Holmes, aren’t quite as guttural, though they are as powerful. There is also a great deal of string work on here, synthesized or not I cannot tell you. This is where the My Dying Bride comparisons come in. Also, the song, “Shepherd to the Faithless” seems to take its cues from any of the various ten minute My Dying Bride songs that exist.
This is an enjoyable album and I recommend getting your hands on it if you are a fan of such goth/doom metal like early Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride.
