McEnroe & Cash – ROCK AND ROLL with the FULL METAL RACKETS
———————————————————–

Curious EP from 1991 by tennis stars John McEnroe and Pat Cash playing guitars instead of tennis rackets, with help on lead vocals by Roger Daltrey of THE WHO, with the mighty rhythm section of IRON MAIDEN (Steve Harris on bass and Nicko McBrain on drums)!

They cover LED ZEPPELIN’s song ROCK AND ROLL – playing three versions, a 3:38 “7 inch mix”, a longer 5:10 “dance mix”, and a 3:38 instrumental version (without Roger’s vocals).

Not that there is anything wrong with Mac or Cash’s guitar playing, but this is more of a curiosity piece for fans of The Who or Iron Maiden than for someone wanting to hear the guitar playing. As a WHO fan I find it cool hearing Roger trying to belt out this Led Zep classic, and although I am a big Maiden fan I would not have figured out it was Harris/McBrain playing on this if they were not listed in the artwork.

Other credited players on this are Andy Barnett (slide guitar), and “Joel” (no last name given?) on backing vocals. There is an organ/piano solo on the extended dance mix but I’m not sure who is playing that (??).

This rare / hard to find EP was released on Music For Nations in 1991, and I believe it was a charity single for “Life Aid Armenia”.

If you were a hard rock devotee, and you dug your sports, you would’ve been aware that in the world of tennis, guys like John McEnroe, Pat Cash and deceased Vitas Gerulaitis were also capable guitar players. Pat Cash used to check out local bands on the Sydney and Melbourne scenes and he was a long time pal of Iron Maiden.  He was regularly thanked on the liner notes of their albums. With his long mullet and head band, you could tell from his tennis garb that he was a fellow rock soldier. And so it was that in 1990, that Pat Cash and the Superbrat (he coulda used that as his rock persona) teamed up with The Who’s Roger Daltrey and indeed the mighty rhythm section from Iron Maiden (McBrain and Harris) to re-record Zeppelin’s Rock n Roll track. I believe the proceeds went towards Rock Aid Armenia so points for that I guess. Musically they are both competent musicians. A very good listening.
