Masters Of Reality – Masters Of Reality

MOR’s debut is one of the pivotal albums of the stoner genre, but “We never thought of ourselves as stoner,” says mainman Chris Goss. “What we were doing was hard rock, but we added in our own twists. You can tell I’m a fan of Yes”

It’s also one of the less heralded gems in the Rick Rubin canon. MOR’s MO was a blues-pumping simmer with flashes of psychedelia, ominous doom-rock sustain and elliptical songs about public hangings, black spiders and wanton sex. The Doors, Zeppelin and Cream all burrowed their way into the band’s sound, with Rubin’s production bathing things in the kind of glowing warmth that made you hanker for the golden era of classic rock. The Blue Garden was trippy progishness, while Domino and The Eyes Of Texas proved they could do heavy with real aplomb.

Essential Stoner Rock Album:

Masters Of Reality – Masters Of Reality

Who’s the most important figure in the stoner genre? While some may claim it to be Josh Homme or Dave Wyndorf, most would accept that Chris Goss owns that that title – lock, stock and spliff. The Masters Of Reality leader has worked as producer and songwriter with so many in his area of music, but arguably his biggest contribution was this kick-against-the-norm self-titled debut from a band who perennially under-achieved, but set the whole ball in a timeless motion. John Brown, The Blue Garden and Domino are fundamental in what was to come later. The dark heart given life.

MASTERS OF REALITY 1989
Entertainment Weekly: “offbeat blend of hard & classic rock”.

MOR’s debut is one of the pivotal albums of the stoner genre, but “We never thought of ourselves as stoner,” says mainman Chris Goss. “What we were doing was hard rock, but we added in our own twists. You can tell I’m a fan of Yes.”

It’s also one of the less heralded gems in the Rick Rubin canon. Masters of Reality is the debut album by the band of the same name, Masters of Reality, originally released in January 1989 on Def American. Due to the artwork on the cover, the original release is sometimes referred to as The Blue Garden.

The track “The Blue Garden” is sampled on Lemon Jelly‘s track “’88 aka Come Down on Me” on their 2005 album
