Description

Eyes of the World is the third studio album by guitarist Tony MacAlpine, released in 1990 through PolyGram. Titled under the band name “MacAlpine”, the album is a departure from his previous work in that it is more commercially oriented, with none of his usual instrumental tracks in the style of neo-classical metal or piano études. According to MacAlpine himself, the project was indeed an attempt to emulate other hard rock acts at the time. Thankfully this LP is an artistic triumph!

5.0 out of 5 stars …in retrospect,

As a long time Tony Macalpine fan, I own every single one of his recordings; and every once in a while I go on a T-Mac listening marathon. Recently, I came across this LP and took another turn at it; guess what?! I like it even more now, than I did in the old days, mainly because I can better appreciate the overall musicianship, the composition and the fact that Tony Macalpine is truly one of the most versatile guitar players out there. He’s not just your average heavy metal guitarist; he’ll play bluesy licks from time to time, jazzy overtones, fusion, metal, progressive rock/metal, neoclassical rock, etc…

The reason I’m saying this is because this record reminds me of that particular trait about Tony the guitar player, the innate ability, as a well-schooled musician, to be melodic, to vary in styles and composition, the application of different textures in his music and his incredible tone and technique. All in all, great voice, great songs (Summer’s Gone) is the highlight in that regard, and great guitar playing. If you don’t own this album, I strongly recommend you buy it!!!

Believe me, when after so many years, listening to it forced me into writing this review, it’s because it’s really a great album worth a listen and a buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars bad ass,
just as good as the 1st and 2nd LP. You have tony macalpine playing guitar and what more do you need buy it

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent melodic rock album from Tony MacAlpine.
Released in 1990, Eyes of the World is the third album from guitar wizard Tony MacAlpine, and the first released as the band MacAlpine instead of as a solo album. For this effort, MacAlpine was joined by vocalist Alan Sehorn, Mark Robertson on keys, Billy Carmassi on drums and Mike Jacques on bass. American Idol judge Randy Jackson also played bass on a few tracks.

I don’t typically follow the guitar heroes. It’s just not my thing. When they put a real band together and make actual songs though, I’m all over it, and that’s what MacAlpine has here. The music here is pretty typical for the late `80s. It’s not quite hair metal and not quite AOR, but a nice melodic mix of the two. They have kind of a Giant/Bad English style. The songs have great hooks and of course some wicked solos, though MacAlpine seems to be holding himself back at times. No wild instrumental tracks on this one. Sehorn is a fantastic vocalist, and really adds a lot to the album, but as far as I’ve been able to find this is his only album.

Eyes of the World is a terrific melodic rock album that should appeal to most fans of the late `80s arena rock style. Tony MacAlpine fans probably won’t get as much out of it as they would his other solo albums, but I think it’s great. If you like what you hear I also recommend Masi’s Downtown Dreamers and pretty much any Axel Rudi Pell album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tony’s 2nd group effort,

well, after a blazing solo career, Tony decided to form a band and try it this way. Although its kind of different in terms of
overall sound, its got Tony all over the place. To me, this kind of sounds like Mr. Big, vocals and composition wise, except there are actual solos. its a great blend of melodic hard rock and the SWEET solos. if you’re a REAL Tony fan, you probably own this. If not, buy it NOW!
