A worthy cause, with various Irish and other participating artists uniting and playing for free for the specially organized Self Help, an initiative in aid of the unemployed in Ireland. At the time of release the unemployment figure in Ireland was three quarters of a million, significant in a country that only had a population of roughly three and a half million. It was very successful and entirely due to the quality of the artists: Elvis Costello, U2, In Tua Nua, The Pogues, Cactus World News, Chris de Burgh, Christy Moore, Thin Lizzy, Van Morrison, The Boomtown Rats and Clannad, all performing their hits.

Notes:
This 1987 album was recorded live on May 17, 1986 at the Self-Aid concert in Dublin. The concert was organized to highlight and to help out the unemployment problem in Ireland that was affecting the country at the time. The concert was also supported by a 7″ release of a song called “Make it Work” which also features on this album (last song on the B side). Larry Mullen was involved in the recording of this track, and also performed live when it was played live.
The concert at the time was the largest staged in Ireland. Many of the acts performed more than the one or two songs that were included on this compilation. U2 that day performed C’Mon Everybody, Pride (In the Name of Love), Maggies Farm, Cold Turkey and Bad.

There were differing versions of this album released with variable tracklisting  in different areas and formats. U2’s contribution was a constant on all of these releases.

It was the Irish version of Live Aid, with U2 kicking it all off with an anguished soul-killing version of Bob Dylan’s ‘Maggie’s Farm.’ I still can’t tell if that’s good or bad. Probably had to be there.

All songs are probably better live, seeing about a dozen or two dozen Irish acts during a 14-hour marathon.

Some of the acts included: Tua Nua, U2, Chris Rea, Clannad, Van Morrison, The Boomtown Rats, Chris De Burgh, and a new version of Thin Lizzy which months earlier lost their frontman Phil Lynott due to a fatal drug overdose.

De Burgh’s expansive organ and guitar laden, ‘Don’t Pay the Ferryman,’ was a chartmaker in the US. DeBurgh’s MOR/classic rock style served them well in the oudoor venue.

Christy  Moore did a nice Irish song called Back in Derry which seemed to resonate.

The Irish concert’s goal was to help  unemployment, which was a major  national problem.

Harry’s Game produced in the 80’s about the troubles in Northern Ireland. A British Army agent is sent to the heart of Belfast to track down a gunman responsible for the killing of a British politician. It’s an incredibly powerful drama. Adapted from a book by Gerald Seymour.
