Life Sentence ライフセンテンス was a hardcore band from Chicago, Illinois. The band got its start in 1984, with the line-up of Joe Losurdo (bass), Eric Brockman (guitar), Tom O’Connor (drums), and Ray Morris (vocals, previously in Six Feet Under). Midway through recording their debut record, the rest of the band dumped their singer and continued as a three-piece. The record, a self-titled 12″”, was finished in 1987, and released on Chicago label Walkthrufyre. Later, the band split into two groups, both calling themselves “”Life Sentence.”” The split was hardly friendly (see the lyrics to “”Win, Lose, or Sue””), and one side actually sued the other. Brockman, the winner of the lawsuit, recruited Jeff Hauck on bass and Gustav Chumpske Roman on drums for the No Experience Necessary album, released in 1989 (1989 on Walkthrufyre Records). The band continued playing until the early 90s.

This is melodic raging hardcore at its finest….. it came out in 1989, when the whole world was about to change from the ”new punk movement” in the coming year or three. This record was part of an explosion. it was a change. there was more too it. it was more thought out. it showed a lot about the future of punk and hardcore. it was more adult, say, than the rest of the childish hardcore that was coming out at the time. it is fucking brilliant. full stop….some of the songs on here are fantastic…..’no experience necessary’, ‘cancer’, ‘domestic squabbles’, ‘freedoms promised dreams’, ‘gun control’. ‘actions speak louder than words’ and ins in the pulpit’ are top of the mark classics of the time (so that nearly the whole lp). we wanted melody, we didn’t want straight edge nonsense, we didn’t want political correct bullshit, we were sick of macho muscled bullshit and we got this. it put Chicago on the map for hardcore for all times…..and I’m just sad to say that this is a forgotten about classic that hardly anyone knows about these days. Hardcore was dying, and we asked for a miracle. we got this fucking humongous lp, and boy were we glad!
This is a somewhat unusual record for its time. In 1989, hardcore bands (at least in the United States) were either experimenting with other musical styles, or were “Youth Crew.” Life Sentence, however, put out “No Experience Necessary,” which is straightforward hardcore punk. Slick production and brief metal guitar licks aside, the music is directly from early eighties California.
Life Sentence bassist and vocalist Joe Losurdo thinks that his 80s hardcore band is probably better known for its T-shirt than for its music. Life Sentence’s logo is one of the best of the era: the word “life” is stamped in huge white capital letters on a red background (an obvious nick from Life magazine), while “sentence” appears in black lowercase directly beneath. There are many examples of known bands whose members have worn a L.S T-shirt, including Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, Napalm Death, and D.R.I.
