Departure is the name of Journey sixth album. It was released in March 1980 on the Columbia Records label.
Departure would be the band highest charting album to date, giving Journey their first appearance in the top 10 of the Billboard album charts. The album includes “”Any Way You Want It””, the lead off track and top 25 single.
The album featured an edgier sound, thanks partly to the “”live in studio”” way the songs were recorded. The band went into the studio with 19 tracks, eventually trimming down to 11.
The album would mark the last studio appearance of founding member Gregg Rolie. He had become tired of life on the road and decided to leave the band after assisting in the selection of his replacement, Jonathan Cain, then of The Babys. Rolie sang lead vocals on only one song on Departure, the ballad “Someday Soon”.

The Departure Tour was one of the first Journey shows to feature pyrotechnics, as a measure before the line “”That gunshot echoed through the town”” on the song Line of Fire, a burst of fire comes through either side of the stage.

We challenge anyone to find a more straight-ahead-euphoria-inducing-explosion-of-balls-to- the-wall feel-good-guitar-rock than Anyway You Want It.
This album is spectacularly enjoyable thanks to some thoughtful use of dynamics, pacing, and style. One will come away remembering the big guitar, soaring vocals, and smooth organ sounds. Rolie keyboards give us some varied sounds this time around and even jams with a harmonica in the uplifting Precious Time. Schon guitar playing is first-rate, especially in the opener and the bluesy I am Cryin’. There is a high level of energy and memorable vocal deliveries from Perry, whose shrill wails are toned down a bit here.
driving riffs and chorused vocals of “”Anyway You Want It”” (another radio smash that would chart Top 25). Never sounding tighter, the quintet then launched into “”Walks Like a Lady”” (another future FM staple, climbing to number 32) and a string of outstanding rockers, including future concert opener “”Where Were You”” and the stop-go-stop-go energy of “”Line of Fire.”” On the other hand, elegant power ballads like “”Good Morning”” and “”Stay Awhile”” would foreshadow the band future commercial triumphs on Escape.

Check audio (whole album, every song):

It may seem odd, but this song Any Way You Want It was actually inspired by Thin Lizzy, with whom Journey had toured a couple of years before recording the Departure album. But when you analyse the way in which the vocals are constructed, and the interchange between the instruments, then it becomes a lot clearer. There’s a gliding feel to the guitar parts that does feel like it is Lizzy influenced, and Perry adopts a storytelling style that is close to the Lynott approach. And the whole feel suits Journey superbly.
