————-RECOMMENDED LP————-
Ignition is the debut solo album from Rock singer-songwriter John Waite (ex-vocalist for The Babys). It was released on Chrysalis in May of 1982, and produced by Neil Giraldo (producer/guitarist for Pat Benatar, who was on the same label).
Two singles were lifted from the record; the Holly Knight-penned “”Change”” failed to make a significant dent on any chart except for the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, where it scored the #16 position. It was, however, one of MTV most popular early videos. Upon the release of the soundtrack to the movie Vision Quest, the single was be re-released and broke into the Top 50 on the pop charts. Its follow-up was the song “”Going To The Top””.
A few famous musicians guested on the album as well. Singer Patty Smyth (then in the band Scandal) handled vocal backing, and drummer Frankie LaRocka (also from Scandal) and bassist Don Nossov (who also played with Benatar) guest here.

“NYC. I literally fell in love with the city. It felt like home. It was still raw and had real edge. My head was on fire and I met a lot of new friends and a girl I was with for eight years. I came into a real “new world”. The result of everything was Ignition, which was probably my first autobiographical album. It was recorded at the famous Power Station and I had all these wonderful musicians like Frankie La Rocka on drums, Donnie Nossov on bass and Ivan Kral on guitar, all outstanding. It’s a solid piece of work and far away from the music everybody was expecting from me”. – John Waite

One of the most outstanding vocalists in AOR / Melodic Rock history is without a doubt JOHN WAITE, as part of The Babys, supergroup Bad English or a solo artist. His first solo album “Ignition” is perhaps his less listened but one of his best, upbeat, hard rocking albums.
Born In Lancashire, England, Waite first achieved popularity and success fronting melodic rockers The Babys notching up two top 20 US hit singles before breaking up the group to launch a solo career… a path that would see him score a US #1 single in 1984 with the plaintiff and hugely powerful ‘Missing You’.
“Ignition”, John’s debut solo album produced by Neil Geraldo – Pat Benatar’s guitarist, producer, mastermind, husband and who knows what else – was recorded in New York City in late 1981 and is widely acknowledged as Waite’s greatest (certainly hardest hitting) album.
Including 10 punchy tracks driven by hard edged (even if extremely processed) guitars handled by the great session monster Tim Pierce, tight rhythm section and commercial mainstream rock ’80s style, this recording still sounds fresh and organic today showcasing Waite’s vocal style un its purest form.
HIGHLY Recommended
“Change” is a song written by Holly Knight and originally recorded by her then-band, Spider, who released the song on their 1981 second album, Between the Lines.
The following year, English musician John Waite, newly a solo artist after fronting The Babys, recorded a version. It was released in 1982 as his debut single from his Chrysalis Records debut album Ignition. The song reached No. 16 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. It was aided by a hugely popular MTV music video featuring Tina Gullickson, an actress and model.
The song (Waite’s version) was also featured on the 1985 Vision Quest soundtrack. The re-launched single entered the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to No. 54

Waite first achieved popularity and success fronting ex-pat hard rockers the Baby, notching up two Top 20 US hit singles before breaking up the group to launch a solo career, a path that would see him score a US #1 single in 1984 with the hugely powerful ‘Missing You’. Ignition, Waite debut solo album was recorded in New York City in late 1981 and reflects a man awash with brave ideals and ruthless musical conviction. Upbeat, bristling with determination and extremely hard rocking, the songs reflect a man on a mission, delivered with one of the most concise productions of the era (courtesy of Pat Benatar guitarist Neil Geraldo). Widely acknowledged as Waite greatest album!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Start for John Waite solo..
Although he’d done stellar work with the Babys, John solo breakout proved to be a nearly-perfect release.
I honestly cannot find a song on here that I do not enjoy. I would not hesitate to say that this is Mr. Waite finest effort, a perfect collection of songs.
“”White Heat”” is a perfect opener for this. Great energy to set the tone for the whole.
“”Change”” is simply a perfect song. Hear it yourself; you’ll now know what to compare music to. Energy, urgency, power, control, quality, production to compliment your material. Three-way-tie with ‘Mr. Wonderful’ & ‘I’m Still in Love’ for best songs. Definitely the radio star.
“”Mr. Wonderful”” was John choice for the first single, and it is so obviously a superior tune. Perfect tune, perfect delivery.
“”Going to the Top”” kind of a bridge between 50 ballad right into the 80. A sense of urgency which runs through the whole LP.
“”Desperate Love”” a great song, with almost frantic urgency, almost a trademark stamp of 80 rock, at least the more-memorable stuff. Very memorable and enjoyable.
“”Temptation”” is a standout of this release. Intricate musically and quite original. Great lyrics, great message for all lovers to adhere to.
“”Be My Baby Tonight”” Great riffs, great vibe, very enjoyable rocker.
“”Make it Happen”” almost a throw-off, but has something worth hearing again.
“”I’m Still in Love”” Wow, now that I re-listen to this, this is one of John better songs throughout his career. GREAT lyrics, great vibe, perfect production, another song which is custom-made for John forte, which is introspective review, pleading of intent and spiritual comfort.
“”Wild Life”” John first SOLO example of the basic rock which he feels comfortable with, but not really his best speciality. A good choice as a closer.
Change, Mr. Wonderful, Temptation, I’m Still In Love, Be My Baby Tonight; all undeniable reasons to OWN this. It includes 10 quality songs which stand out above so much junk of so many decades. Appreciate the quality.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love this album! Reminds me of high school.,
John Waite “”Ignition”” is a great LP. I don’t love all the songs on it, but the songs I do love I REALLY love. If you like John Waite, you HAVE to get this.

Enjoy! it worth the cash. . . Ignition
5.0 out of 5 stars great Waite
Great work.
Not too many soft songs: it still rocking, not like the new stuff released after Bad English. A lot of great songs like the unusual Mr Wonderful.
Mr. Wonderful Lyrics:
I can’t play these games with you no more
I get my fingers caught inside your door
And now everything I say is just a joke
Spend my money now you leave me broke
Living someone’s life in clear blue skies
Fairy tales and dreams, and alibis
All you want from me are things for you
Use me till I don’t know what to do
You live in your own world anyway
Twisting every single thing I say
In my home town I feel out of place
Changed my name, I’ll find a different face
You tell me no more cool, Mr. Wonderful
No more nice, Mr. Clean
No more cool, Mr. Ideal
It’s driving me out of my mind, yeah, yeah
I can hear the wolves outside the bar
And sometimes I don’t know which one you are
Imitation’s all that you accept
Shadows of myself that you once met
Bottles in the alley break and smash
Get into the car for one car crash
You tell me no more cool, Mr. Wonderful
No more nice, Mr. Clean
No more cool, Mr. Ideal
It’s driving me out of my mind, yeah, yeah
No more cool, Mr. Wonderful
No more nice, Mr. Clean
No more cool, Mr. Ideal
It’s driving me out of my mind, yeah, yeah
Mr. Wonderful
No way, Mr. Clean
No more cool, Mr. Ideal
It’s driving me out
It’s driving me out of my mind
Mr. Wonderful
No way, Mr. Clean
No more cool, Mr. Ideal
It’s driving me out
It’s driving me out of my mind, ooh
