Guitarist John Five, known for his work with Marilyn Manson, David Lee Roth, Rob Halford, etc., delivers his first instrumental solo record, “”Vertigo.”” John Five shows phenomenal diversity as a writer/guitarist and “”Vertigo”” further showcases him as one of the most technically advanced guitarists today. Fans of driving rhythms and ear-catching, over the top, guitar work will keep this in their CD player for months on end.

5.0 out of 5 stars So refreshing!!!,
I TOTALLY didn’t know what to expect when I bought this considering the Manson ties. But after reading a couple of reviews, I went and got it. Just like the site reviewed, it HAS NOT left my CD player! I come from the school of listening to Vai, Satriani, Kotzen, and many other instrumental players and this CD blows me away. Usually one style is throughout a cd, but with John 5, he changes his style on every song and approaches every song differently. And shredding country/bluegrass songs to boot?! I can not wait to see him do this stuff live. To think that he hidden this talent for so long! Hats off to John 5 for stepping up and putting out a CD like this. It a MUST HAVE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent,
Having always been a fan of John 5 work with Marilyn Manson, I was eager to buy this album as soon as it was released. I picked it up and have been listening to it non-stop.

I’m extremely impressed with John 5 talent. While I won’t say that he was “”stifled”” working with Marilyn Manson, this album truly demonstrates his talent and I found myself actually surprised that he was this skilled.

Also surprising were the “”country””-styled tunes on the album, obviously completely different from the other harder-rocking tracks, but equally good (if not better in some ways), and these tunes beautifully showcase John 5 diversity in talent.

The album begins with “”Needles, CA”” which is an excellent, driving tune that immediately showcases John technical talents. My jaw actually dropped open when I listened to it the first time. Other heavy tracks include “”Fiesty Cadavers”” and “”Zugg Island Convict.””

My favorite on the album is track 7, entitled “”Flatlines, Thin Lines”” – It has a beat which can almost be described as funky with a soaring ‘chorus’ riff that uplifting and truly beautiful. I’m also quite fond of “”Dead Man Dream”” – I can’t quite describe it other than to say that it hypnotizing and somehow majestic.

I’d recommend this album to anyone with an appreciation for true guitar talent. The riffs are strong, the arrangements are extremely creative and it definitely a solid album. John 5 rocks 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!,
Who seriously thought that John 5 of all people would kick this much A$$!!! Manson held this guitar player back way too much!!! John 5 is so talented that he is as good as Vai and Satriani. This album is so technically beautiful that it is hard to explain and it really showcases John 5 skill as a guitar player. Thank you Johhy,I love you!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guitar lovers must have,
If you play guitar or enjoy listening to any instrument played well, buy this. It is not like Joe Satriani etc. who play awesome, but somewhat boring. This CD slashes and cuts from the first track to the last. Something for everyone.

My Dad : Classical/Country; My brother: flamenco/classsic rock; My Nephew : Hard Hard Rock. Me? Very wide range of musical loves, including all of the above. What do we all have in common? We were knocked out by this CD. Couldn’t wipe the smile off my face for hours after the first listen.

Awesome hard rock; technical blue-grass and blues riffs; tasteful and blazing (can his fingers really move that fast?); and very very inventive. Just listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible!,
John 5 has put together an incredible collection of sounds on this CD. There is honestly something for everyone, from heavy metal shredding to bluegrass pickin’, this disc has it all.

So many musicians these days seem to be making music for mass consumption rather than something that they really love. Vertigo seems to be a refreshing breath of fresh air. While I loved his work with Marilyn Manson, I don’t think that he was able to showcase his unbelievable abilities.

Vertigo, with its vastly different sounds through the 42 minute ride, is hopefully only the tip of the iceberg as far as John 5 solo career. I can’t wait for more of the same in the future. Great overall CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes a change,
Frankly, i wasn’t a huge manson fan, perhaps it was his die hard fans and their average age of 15 and little in the way of musical diversity, however the man wrote great rock, but manson isnt the one im reviewing.
John 5 is hyped, but in the wrong direction certain reviewers, giving scores of 1 or 0 claim that he is all hyper and playing with manson in makeup built him up. But then, John Lowery is a respected player Vai himself said that the new album showed originality and creativity, Les Paul (heard of him guys?) having heard Lowery play urged him to release a solo effort, and he did.
I own satrianis surfing with the alien and crystal planet, and have heard some of his best tracks, the same goes for vai, owning flex-able flex-able leftovers (all fancy techniques and flash, i thought someone said that about john, but leftovers really was scraping the bucket) passion and warfare and the ultra zone, yet vai never gained the popularity manson did, perhaps due to image.
In relation to the person who said lowerys record label was poor and that he should have given up, Andy timmons, an amazing player, still only plays on vai favoured nations label, a label so small the cd that was then this is now, is nearly impossible to find in stores, also, if lowery is so washed up why is it that hes playing for rob zombie on tour, or that, due to his “”poor tone”” he has previously played for david lee roth and rob halford, and, wait who else played for lee roth.. oh yeh, vai.
Frankly, i like Vai and Satriani, but! their records are samey, i welcome country techniques seen in john 5s playing, chicken pickin’ right through to banjo rolls, infact, i challenge those downraters to actually play zugg island conflict or sugar foot rag to the level that john 5 can, amazing record, good technique, a breath of fresh air from the usual overinflated shred scene

5.0 out of 5 stars Insturmental Rock At Its Best,
I have been a fan of Marilyn Manson for a while (John 5 former band for those of you who have been living under a rock), but the band didn’t let John 5 showcase his skills nearly as much as this album does. It an incredible trip from industrial to rockabilly to metal… this man is an incredibly versatile guitar player.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ship Has Landed……,
Imagine Vai, White Zombie, Buckethead, Jerry Donnahue, Will Ray, Doc Watson, Chet Atkins, Tom Morello, early Van Halen, and Slipknot (guitar-wise) all wrapped up into one machine. I’m at a loss for words here folks. And weird thing is it all fits together. This is perhaps the best guitar instrumental album I’ve heard in years. Seriously. Imagine a Hellecasters album with doses of White Zombie/Slipknot heaviness, tons of shredding, and brilliant production. Unreal. Fans of guitar music need this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown Away!,
As A fan of Marilyn Manson i originally bought the cd just because John 5 was his guitarist but after listening to this cd i was blown away. From the opening of Needles,CA to dead man dream and Vertigo, you will be impressed. This a great cd and worth every penny! Looking foreword to future releases from John 5.Not one track sucks, everyone is a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal Country Twang,
John 5 is one hell of a guitar player and this is a super cd packed with lots of great guitar pickin to listen to. This guy has a lot of talent. A CD with nothing but guitar instrumentals… how odd for this day and age of meaningless boy or girl band talentless twits thinking they have talent and continually proving they don’t. Regardless of whether you like rock, country, bluegrass, or metal, I’m certain that you will like this album! My next wish is to get my guitar playing up to John 5 level!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Fusion of all Guitar Styles.,
If you don’t like this CD, you are crazy. This CD is absolutely amazing. It gives the guitar world a new hero and virtuoso. His guitar style is unique and refreshing, and every song on the CD is worth listening to over and over. No matter what kind of music you like, you should like this album. For his first solo record, I was amazingly surprised, and after waiting for the album, it was well worth it. I highly suggest this album to any guitar player for inspiration and great listening, and to any non- guitar player for a great instrumental CD. The country/ metal fusion may throw you off, but don’t be fooled, it amazing. Go buy it. Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Give John 5 a chance,
Listening to these songs not knowing who the artist is, chances are you wouldn’t know it the same guitarist who played with Marilyn Manson for several years. Who knew John Lowery (stage name: John 5) had this kind of stuff bottled up? It fairly apparent John musical capabilities were held back while in Manson, judging by how technically advanced these songs are in comparison to the simple Gothic riffs he was playing before.

Vertigo is entirely instrumental, and it only fitting so John can showcase his talents. He handles all guitars, banjo, bass, mandolin, and lap steel. This album fuses metal, bluegrass, and even country – and it works. At times the shredding is somewhat over-the-top, but from start to finish John playing is pleasantly overwhelming. Don’t expect a masterpiece like Steve Vai might put forth, but expect an impressive solo effort from an instrumentalist with a metal background.

Give John 5 a chance, because you may be surprised with what a lipstick-smeared rocker can bring to the table.

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest assessment from a music lover,
I originally heard about this album when I picked up some guitar magazine in Kroger killing time waiting for a friend. Don’t know why, I don’t play an instrument that would be the other Jessen. However the mag said some extremely good things about John, his history, who he used to play with, and his original goals when he started playing. Originally he set out to be a session guitarist and (according to the mag) only by happen-stance wound up playing for Rob Halford, David Lee Roth, and later Manson.

That being said I finally found a copy of this album in tower records in March of 2005. I was blown away by the combinations, when I listen to music I hear numbers and rhythms. That being said the overall musical texture “”fills you up and never lets you down.”” It makes on congruent whole from the first track to the last John intertwined use of lead and steal create a listening experience that makes you wish Marty Robbins was still alive so he could lend his voice.

The Music is great and I don’t mind the lack of someone singing because that would take away from the overall quality of the music being heard. For those of us who despise music that has no balance this album is a welcome change. Think Zack Wylde (live in concert) with a steel guitar.

Buy this CD

5.0 out of 5 stars The five stars are for the guitar playing –
My poor guitar. .. It gets picked up more then a dedicated hooker in this house.. . In the last 10 years, I think aside from women, and music, my guitar has been turned into some kind of never ending art project.. . Never satisfied.. . Just when you think your getting good, you meet someone that puts you to shame. But isn’t that the best part of playing this addictive instrument? Never truly being satisfied with your place in the long line of guitar players?

Anyway ~~ As far as the ever changing line up of Marilyn Manson. Zim Zum didn’t impress me. I personally thought Daisy Berkowitz was the best guitar player Marilyn Manson had up until John 5 came on board. He literally made old songs sound 10 times better live. And pretty much made everything off portrait, his.

What ever the reason may be that the band parted with John, they still haven’t found someone to fill his shoes that even close to his talent. I’m saying this only because I have seen the band twice since John left, and I personally see now first hand what John brings to the band. Something that will be no easy task for Manson to replace.

Unless they do find someone better then John,
the band would just be going backwards.

“”Vertigo”” is a very difficult Cd to review. Only because it depends on who your recommending it to. I’m sure he definitely had a “”I DON’T GIVE A F%$K WHAT YOUR GOING TO THINK”” attitude. And the guitar playing on this Cd is incredible. The guy has learned how to talk with his guitar. “”Flatlines, Thin Lines”” , and “”Vertigo”” are probably my 2 favorite tracks on the Cd. What he does on the song Vertigo is impressive. But I think I can safely say this Cd would be more appreciated by a guitar player, rather then your average music fan. Definitely something to have in your Cd collection.

5 stars for the guitar playing*

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Shit,
Three words: Sick guitar work. John Lowery is awesome, to put it lightly. There are several different styles of music on this cd. It is all instrumental and goes from Gothic style riffs to classic rock, to bluegrass. Everything a guitarist could want to hear is on this CD. This guy is amazing, nonstop sickening licks, sweep picks, banjo rolls, anything you could think of is here. If you are a guitarist this is a cd you will appreciate. John Lowery is up there with Vai, Satriani, and Malmsteen, he is amazingly versatile, you WILL be impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a work of art,
I never criticize Marilyn Manson, ever…but has he even come close to realizing what he lost when John5 left? As they say, “”You cannot grow in the shadow of a mighty oak.”” Marilyn Manson is the mighty oak, and John5 desperately needed to grow. That said, this is the best move he has ever made and now the world knows what a visionary he really is.

This album is so far beyond amazing that I cannot find the words to accurately describe its power. It like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai smushed together, but unlike Satriani somewhat over-the-top solos, John is straight and to the point. Diehard Manson fans will love it for songs like “”Feisty Cadavers”” and the title track, and even country fans could love it for “”Sugar Foot Rag,”” “”Sweet Georgia Brown”” and “”Salt Creek”” among others. No matter what you like, this album has something for everyone. I hope no one dares to say that John was out of his bounds on the bluegrass-inspired tracks because clearly, his diverse interests transforms him into a well-rounded artist as opposed to just another yuppie with a six-string. No one can say that John is not talented because he displays the most talent I have yet heard in a guitar solo album, and believe me…I’ve heard them all. I’ve been listening to classic rock and hard rock since I was 3 and have been studying it since I was old enough to study. As was mentioned above, it has not…and will not…leave my CD player. If you call yourself a musician, this is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars John5 is a force to be reckoned with.,
I came across this CD when I was at my college radio station and I was completely blown away. Check this out, you won’t be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Showcase of Guitar Skill,
This album has its heavy rock incorporated for those Manson fans that know John5, but the album includes some different guitar styles that will shock fans. It has bluegrass shred along with other different kinds of guitar styles. The entire album is strictly instrumental. John really shows what skills he has developed over time. Any guitar players out there that wanna hear the next big guitar player out there, I recommend you pick up this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn!,
I used to listen to Marilyn Manson a lot and never heard anything like this! This guy is amazing at the guitar! I never would have expected this coming from Marilyn Manson guitarist.
