This *is* the original concept album that you remember. Same recordings, same performances. It was not “patched together from various performances,” as some have misunderstood.
What ALW means in the liner notes is that the original 16-track tapes were mostly lost, so it couldn’t be re-mixed – but mixing and mastering are not the same thing. The CD was re-*mastered* from the 2-track mixes that were used for the original LP. It is *those* tapes he found among his personal belongings, and it was those tapes that were used as the original sources for the CD.
5.0 out of 5 stars I still remember every single word within this brown covered gatefold LP, one of the greatest “soundtracks” ever released. In my opinion, this remains the best work of its famous authors.
Once banned as sacrilegious by the BBC (according to Ted Neely, the film Judas), in the U.S. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR reached #1 on Billboard’s 200. It represents a unique example of theatre imitating vinyl. After selling millions of copies worldwide, what had only been a studio recording was expanded by lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber into a stage show. After playing to sell-out crowds again in many countries, “Superstar” was adapted to film in 1973 . Barry Dennen (Pilate) and Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdelene) are the only original studio cast members to appear in Norman Jewison’s picture.
MAIN CAST–
Ian Gillan – Jesus Christ
Murray Head – Judas Iscariot
Yvonne Elliman – Mary Magdalene
Victor Brox – Caiaphas, High Priest
Brian Keith – Annas
John Gustafson – Simon Zealotes
Barry Dennen – Pontius Pilate
Paul Davis – Peter
Mike d’Abo – King Herod
That eerie synthesizer in the Overture (and elsewhere) is played by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. The guitarist is listed as Steve Vaughn, but it’s not Stevie Ray. He was only 16 when this was recorded.
