Here’s where the story starts my friends, in terms of singles, of course!! Released in 08/02/1980 reached the number 34 in the UK top chart, not bad hey?!!
The sleeve is from thin paper and the vinyl is black. Eddie looming out of the half-light (with his features deliberately hidden) to chase someone down to their violent doom set the template for the horrors that would follow this most iconic of band mascots. While the band’s musical and sporting heroes are writ large (or spray painted) on the alley wall behind him: Scorpions, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin and the Hammers. On the back we see a black and white live photo, probably taken at the Ruskin Arms Pub where Maiden used to play a lot on the early days.

The single has, on the B side, the very first song Steve Harris wrote called , Burning Ambition. A beautiful and sadly unappreciated song.

Songs are:

Side A: Running Free, album version
Side B: Burning Ambition (first song Steve ever wrote)

Cat.nº: UK EMI 5032

Iron Maiden – Running free 1980
Just sixteen, a pickup truck, out of money, out of luck.
I’ve got nowhere to call my own, hit the gas, and here I go.

I’m running free yeah, I’m running free.
I’m running free yeah, Oh I’m running free.

Spent the night in an L. A. jail, and listened to the sirens wail.
But they ain’t got a thing on me, I’m running wild, I’m running free.

I’m running free yeah, I’m running free.
I’m running free yeah, Oh I’m running free.
(Instrumental)

I’m running free yeah, I’m running free.
I’m running free yeah, Oh I’m running free.
(Instrumental)

Pulled her at the bottle top, whiskey, dancing, disco hop.
All the boys are after me, and that’s the way it’s goona be

I’m running free yeah, I’m running free.
I’m running free yeah, Oh I’m running free.

I’m running, I’m running free …

Burning Ambition

Considering the extravagance and musical development that would follow in later years, the B-side of the single Running Free shows Maiden and their Di’Anno-fronted days in a more simplistic light. Yet its innocence is charming, the delicate guitar melody at its epicentre a throwback to composer Steve Harris’ well-documented admiration for Wishbone Ash.

Iron Maiden – Burning Ambition

So you think you can own me, well you’d better just think again
You’d better watch your steps now, woman, cause I ain’t like those other men
There’s something burning inside me that makes me want to be free
And when I get these feelings honey, you better keep away from me

There’s things in life now, baby, that I know I’ve got to do
And I need your love now, baby, to help me see it through
So you think you can own me, well you’d better just think again
You’d better watch your steps now, woman, cause I ain’t like those other men
