Homer was and will probably always be a weird band for the fact that for the most part they seem to be a blend of musicians from other bands rather than an entity that totally stands on its own. There are still those tracks that are firmly rooted into that pure feeling of melancholy the band (and especially the vocals) seem to convey so well. There is that fresh and newly found energetic breeze that comes with most of the tracks. Producer Dirk Miers succeeded in really capturing the recent aggressive and heavy edge in the bands music and gives their tracks that extra bit of punch they so much needed. He also was able to maintain a natural flow on an album that incessantly changes pace and freestyles between a good number of contemporary flavors. There’s the fast-paced Strung-Out esque tracks that make up the bulk of the songs on this release and for the most part are true stormers not to be denied, the slow rockers that once again show Homer from their more well-known emotional and melancholic side, and then there’s the odd addition of extra instrumentation, marking the quantum leap in progress the band has gone through and making Homer a whole lot more interesting to listen to. Johan’s vocals skills where always very able but the addition of raw shouts executed by Dries of the Maple Room are like a godsend and make me hope they will experiment more along these lines. The Punkrock Verses is a very varied and commendable album.
