Description
Equal parts punk attitude and power chord pop hook glory, Holly & The Italians’ lone album and its killer lead track “Tell That Girl To Shut Up” a long-time fave. Not a sleeper to be found in its tracks. 10/10, strongly recommend!

Formed in Los Angeles, but met little success. Holly Beth Vincent & Steve Young relocated to London where they formed a new band. A record deal was secured through Charlie Gillett. Toured with The Selecter and The Bodysnatchers.
This album was produced by musical genius Richard Gottehrer, the man behind such successful artists as the Angels (“”my boyfriend back”” – 1963), Blondie (self titled – 1976) , the Go-Go (produced the first two LP) and many, many more!
Holly and the Italians were a short-lived American pop punk band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1978 by Chicago born singer and guitarist Holly Beth Vincent, bassist Mark Sidgwick, and drummer Steve Young. They relocated to London, England and after playing on the pub circuit extensively, they quickly came to prominence as the opening act for fellow Americans Blondie, and were signed to disc jockey Charlie Gillett record label, Oval. The 1980 release of the single “Tell That Girl to Shut Up” garnered the band a recording contract with Virgin Records. While the single wasn’t a very big hit for Holly and the Italians, it would be in 1988 when covered by Transvision Vamp. The band recorded their only album, The Right to Be Italian, produced by Richard Gottehrer. In August 1980, they played the major Heatwave festival near Toronto. In 1982, Holly Beth Vincent released a solo album entitled Holly and the Italians. The album was critically acclaimed, and the subsequent video gained some airtime on MTV. Later that year Vincent recorded a duet of Sonny and Cher “I Got You Babe” with Ramones frontman Joey Ramone.
“Tell That Girl to Shut Up” is a song written by Holly Beth Vincent and originally recorded by her band, Holly and the Italians in 1979. A cover version by UK pop/rock band Transvision Vamp was released in 1988 as the second single from their debut album Pop Art.
Tell That Girl to Shut Up – Holly and the Italians
Transvision Vamp Tell That Girl To Shut Up. 1988 single charting at #45 in the UK in March 1988, #44 in Australia in February 1989, and #87 in the US in October 1988. From the album ‘Pop Art’, this track is a cover version of a song originally recorded by Holly and the Italians.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful , wonderful , wonderful
You know what ? Just buy this album it’s worth every single penny! Sheer unadulterated musical brilliance !
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music – One of the best female voices EVER!
I have been a huge fan of Holly Beth Vincent ever since I first heard Holly & The Italians, and I still have my original (but very worn!) 7″ single of ‘Tell that Girl To Shut Up’. This album should have sold millions and Holly should have gone on to be an international star. Why she did not is a total mystery to me, as she is still making great music (try ‘Super Rocket Star’ her latest album which was released in 2007).
5.0 out of 5 stars Right to Be Italian
This album contains some of the best 3 minute pop songs that the world somehow overlooked.
Simple guitar, drum and bass punk/pop tunes with the voice of Holy Beth Vincent long before she dueted with Joey Ramone this record brilliantly sums up the post-punk, power-pop days.
Tell That Girl To Shut Up was later covered by Transvision Vamp but as ever you should listen to the original.
Even better live, Holly and the Italians lost their way but for these few minutes they could, and should, have ruled the world.
Try it – you will not be disappointed !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Stuff
Great stuff from a talented group of musicians. You will not hear this on the radio…which is a plus in my opinion.
