This is a must have LP! Featuring Gary Moore on guitars!!
Following the break up of iconic progressive rock band “ELP” in 1978, bassist Greg Lake found himself with a solo record deal which subsequently led to the release of “Greg Lake” (1981)
In contrast to the progressive nature of “ELP”, Lake’s self titled solo album finds the artist experimenting with melodic rock/AOR prioritizing song writing above all other musical aspects. An incredible feat for both albums is Gary Moore’s participation as a full time member handling all guitars. For that matter most fans of Moore will recognize the song “Nuclear Attack” featured here, a version of which is found on Gary Moore’s “Dirty Fingers”(1984) album. Still it has to be clear that Lakes debut stands apart from a Gary Moore solo album. “Greg Lake” is hardly hard rock, mainly AOR/melodic rock with a minor progressive twist here and there. In particular the guitars are somewhat low in the mix, especially the lead parts while the bass and complementary keyboards are fronting the mix; most important are Lakes lead vocals being the protagonist instrument on these recording. Beyond Lake and Moore the line up features renowned rock musicians drummer Ted McKenna and key player Tommy Eyre. Favorite tracks include “Nuclear Attack”, “Retribution Drive”, “The lie” and “I love you too much”.
For fans of “ELP”, “Thin Lizzy” and Gary Moore it is a great documentation of a short-lived partnership and a piece of rock history. A must for “Gary Moore” enthusiasts.
5.0 out of 5 stars Greg Lake debut!
Greg Lake one of the best British vocalists and tremendous bass player, would release his first solo album in the spring of 1981. After the break-up of ELP in 1978, on this album he brought in Irish guitarist Gary Moore, who was just getting done with his album “Dirty Fingers”, and the group G-Force(which disbanded). Greg also brought in the late Tommy Eyre on keyboards, Tristram Margetts (Spontaneous Combustion) 1971-1974 on bass and Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher) on drums. Other notable players on this disc included, Mike Giles (King Crimson), Snuffy Walden (Stray Dog) which Lake produced in 1973, Clarence Clemons (E-Street Band) and Steve Lukather, David Hungate and the late Jeff Porcaro from (Toto). The album starts with the Gary Moore classic “Nuclear Attack”, which Greg did wonders with the song and Gary’s solo was what sold me on this album in the first place (Which i heard it on the radio, they actually played good music in the old days)! “Love You Too Much”, co-written with Bob Dylan, fast paced tune with some sharp guitar work by Gary. “It Hurts”, is a dramatic mid-tempo rocker ballad which fits Greg’s voice to a tee, Gary’s solo at the end is priceless. “Black And Blue”, this is one of Greg’s best ballads. “Retribution Drive”, here changes styles and comes out smokin’, an upbeat charmer with some funky guitar work by Gary, nice keyboard work by Tommy Eyre. “Long Goodbye”, continues the hard charging Greg, nice cowbell by Ted McKenna. “The Lie”, a very good mid-tempo rocker, with some sturdy guitar by Gary. “Someone”, a rollicking tune with shifty rhythms, sax solo by the “Big Man”, Clarence Clemmons. “Let Me Love You Once Before You Go”, #49 hot 100, a nice single that gave the album some push, a very ELP sounding tune. “For Those Who Dare”, bagpipes, Irish sounding, Greg’s salute to the troops, another tune that brings to mind late ELP. Thanks to Rock Candy and Andy Pearce for finally releasing this album. Nice 12 page booklet inside. If your a Gary Moore fan get these two Greg Lake albums and if your an ELP fan, you should also get these albums. Greg would release “Manoeuvres”, in mid 1983.
The album opens with “Nuclear Attack,” which comes on a bit harder than what you might be used to from ELP, with a hard rock guitar kicking off the tune, and there’s a reason for that. The song was written by Gary Moore, who was Thin Lizzy’s guitarist. It’s about the unlikelihood of surviving a nuclear war. “Out on the streets, they’re all living in fear/You can feel their hearts pound as the moment draws near/One push of the button is all it would take/To dress the world in black/One fault in the system, a fatal mistake/And you’ll never come back from a nuclear attack.” Yup, this song is still timely, still relevant. “Nuclear Attack” was also released as a single. Gary Moore would record his own version, including it on his Dirty Fingers album. That song is followed by “Love You Too Much,” which was also released as a single (and was also the flip side to the “Nuclear Attack” single, as well as the flip side to the German single for “For Those Who Dare”). This one is a lot more fun. It’s a good rock tune, even including a reference to “Blue Suede Shoes” (“Well, you can take me, honey, and steal my money/You can step on my blue suede shoes/’Cause I love you too much”). And there is plenty of great work on guitar. This is one of the album’s best tracks, and it was co-written by Bob Dylan. It was written by Bob Dylan, Helena Springs and Greg Lake (Greg Lake talks about it in the liner notes).
Another highlight for me is “Black And Blue.” It begins with a sweet, kind of dreamy sound. “Oh, darling, don’t stop loving me/No, I never meant to fill your dreams with heartaches/Or to send your true love crashing to the floor.” And then when the song kicks in, it has kind of a catchy pop vibe. This one was written by Greg Lake, and is one I enjoy more each time I listen to it. “’Cause no one else ever touched me the way you do/So darling, don’t you leave me, I’ll never get over you.” There is something about “Long Goodbye” that I really like. It’s a good, energetic, pulsing rock song with some decent lyrics, with lines like “You know I’ve driven all night/But the landscape screams your name” and “I know your smile’s so warm, but you’re causing grief/’Cause you’ve taken my tongue in your flashing teeth/And you’ve ruined my soul, because your love’s still out of reach.” “Long Goodbye” was written by Greg Lake, Tony Benyon and Tommy Eyre.
I am also really fond of “Someone,” which was also written by Greg Lake, Tony Benyon and Tommy Eyre. It has a quirky, strange yet delightful vibe, with a certain power. “Feeling your hunger/Ringing your number/Listening to your voice/I’m drunk and I’m calling/Tripping and falling/Wishing I had a choice.” And I love that work on keys. This might actually be the album’s best track. That’s followed by “Let Me Love You Once,” which was written by Stephen Dorff and Molly Leiken, and was released as a single. This song was recorded by Barbara Fairchild in 1976, and by Dusty Springfield, who released it as a single in 1977. The first verse of Greg Lake’s rendition is different from that of those other two versions. Yes, this song is a bit cheesier than the other tracks on this album, but it’s still a good song.
Greg Lake brings his all Band featuring Guitar Legend Gary Moore & Drummer extraordinaire Ted McKenna & Keyboardist Tommy Eyre on a small US Tour. Here at the Palladium in NYC.
