Greg Lake is the self-titled debut solo album of singer Greg Lake, released in 1981. It features ex-Thin Lizzy member Gary Moore on guitar, and the song “Love You Too Much” co-written with Bob Dylan. The guitars solos on the song It Hurts were played by Steve Lukather of Toto.

Following the break up of iconic progressive rock band “ELP” in 1978, bassist Greg Lake found himself with a solo record deal which subsequently led to the release of “Greg Lake” (1981)
In contrast to the progressive nature of “ELP”, Lakes self titled solo album finds the artist experimenting with melodic rock/AOR prioritizing songwriting above all other musical aspects. An incredible feat for both albums is Gary Moore’s participation as a full time member handling all guitars. For that matter most fans of Moore will recognize the song “Nuclear Attack” featured here, a version of which is found on Gary Moore’s “Dirty Fingers”(1984) album. Still it has to be clear that Lakes debut stands apart from a Gary Moore solo album. “Greg Lake” is hardly hard rock, mainly AOR/melodic rock with a minor progressive twist here and there. In particular the guitars are somewhat low in the mix, especially the lead parts while the bass and complementary keyboards are fronting the mix; most important are Lakes lead vocals being the protagonist instrument on these recording. Beyond Lake and Moore the line up features renowned rock musicians drummer Ted McKenna and key player Tommy Eyre. Favorite tracks include “Nuclear Attack”, “Retribution Drive”, “The lie” and “I love you too much”.
For fans of “ELP”, “Thin Lizzy” and Gary Moore it is a great documentation of a short-lived partnership and a piece of rock history. A must for “Gary Moore” enthusiasts.

Greg Lake one of the best British vocalists and tremendous bass player, would release his first solo album in the spring of 1981. After the break-up of ELP in 1978, on this album he brought in Irish guitarist Gary Moore, who was just getting done with his album “Dirty Fingers”, and the group G-Force(which disbanded). Greg also brought in the late Tommy Eyre on keyboards, Tristram Margetts (Spontaneous Combustion) 1971-1974 on bass and Ted McKenna (Rory Gallagher) on drums. Other notable players on this disc included, Mike Giles (King Crimson), Snuffy Walden (Stray Dog) which Lake produced in 1973, Clarence Clemons (E-Street Band) and Steve Lukather, David Hungate and the late Jeff Porcaro from (Toto). The album starts with the Gary Moore classic “Nuclear Attack”, which Greg did wonders with the song and Garys solo was what sold me on this album in the first place (Which i heard it on the radio, they actually played good music in the old days)! “Love You Too Much”, co-written with Bob Dylan, fast paced tune with some sharp guitar work by Gary. “It Hurts”, is a dramatic mid-tempo rocker ballad which fits Gregs voice to a tee, Garys solo at the end is priceless. “Black And Blue”, this is one of Gregs best ballads. “Retribution Drive”, here changes styles and comes out smokin’, an upbeat charmer with some funky guitar work by Gary, nice keyboard work by Tommy Eyre. “Long Goodbye”, continues the hard charging Greg, nice cowbell by Ted McKenna. “The Lie”, a very good mid-tempo rocker, with some sturdy guitar by Gary. “Someone”, a rollickin’ tune with shifty rhythms, sax solo by the “Big Man”, Clarence Clemmons. “Let Me Love You Once Before You Go”, #49 hot 100, a nice single that gave the album some push, a very ELP sounding tune. “For Those Who Dare”, bagpipes, irish sounding, Gregs salute to the troops, another tune that brings to mind late ELP. Thanks to Rock Candy and Andy Pearce for finally releasing this album. Nice 12 page booklet inside. If your a Gary Moore fan get these two Greg Lake albums and if your an ELP fan, you should also get these albums. Greg would release “Manoeuvres”, in mid 1983.
