Oddly resurrecting an apparently worn out genre and its paraphernalia glam rock GIRL formed in 1979 in the midst of the second wave of punk rock and the beginning of the crossover HM scene (the so called NWOBHM) A possible trait d’union between the 1970s glam scene and its hairdresser focused LA based mid 1980s revival GIRL released their first album Sheer Greed in January 1980 with the clear intention of being the British New York Dolls Besides the obvious use of heavy make up and female clothes to gain the attention of the press GIRL put out an excellent collection of sheer heavy boogie rock’n’roll tunes that probably would have had more success than they did had the timing been right Includes their cover version of Kiss’ Do You Love Me who GIRL opened for at some of Stanley and Simmons’ combos 1980 UK tour dates and features singer Phil Lewis who would later emigrate and become the LA Guns frontman in 1987
Remembered chiefly for featuring singer Phil Lewis who went on to join L.A. Guns, and guitarist Phil Collen who made the very wise decision to accept an invitation to join Def Leppard, Girl had plenty of creative potential but were misunderstood by their record label, Jet, and unappreciated by a rock scene that at the time was in the denim-and-leather grip of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
Deliberately cultivating an androgynous glam aesthetic absolutely guaranteed to bring them a sound bottling by a Reading Festival crowd, their style was a peculiar clash of Aerosmith, Japan, Starz and New York Dolls.

GIRL LOVE IS A GAME
(Jet, 1980)
Great Britain 1979-1983
GIRL were a band well ahead of their time and might not be so bold if we were to place them among the pre-glam sleazy hard rockers. No doubt a bit of a shock to N.W.O.B.H.M. scene, but they were clearly more influential on the other side of the Atlantic, (POISON to GUNS’N’ROSES). Quite popular for their impressive live performances, they toured with the PAT TRAVERS BAND, and UFO twice. In fact, in one of their live performances, Richie Blackmoore appeared in the encore and played a cover of “Born to be wild” with them! “Love is a game” was written by Russ Ballard (him again!), it’s not on any of their albums and it was also released on white vinyl. A track with a full, clear sound and dynamic guitar lines. For the b-side (“Little miss Ann”, from “Sheer greed”) the same applies, except that it has a heavier atmosphere and you don’t think it’s an English band.
GIRL had all the makings of a great career but disbanded after recording their third album, which was never released. If they appeared a few years later they would certainly have better luck. After the breakup, guitarist Phil Collen went to DEF LEPPARD, while Philip Lewis a few years later became the frontman of L.A GUNS, with whom he re-recorded “Hollywood tease”, the first track of GIRL’s first album, “Sheer Greed ” (Jet, 1980). It was a case of wrong time and wrong place for GIRL.
