This is the only commercially available live document of vintage Gabriel-era Genesis. LIVE was recorded at the groups 1973 peak, and features hard core fans’ favourite line-up, including Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett. The flawless song selection favours tunes from the beloved albums FOXTROT and TRESPASS. The semi-baroque keyboards of Tony Banks and the whisper-to-a-scream dynamic of Hackett are displayed in all their glory.
The songs tend toward the long side (not one is under eight minutes long–prog-rock heaven!), giving the group ample time to work its complex, time signature-shifting, contrapuntal magic. The energy of his performance comes through in his urgent vocals, and he delivers some of his most sharply penned lyrics. Subsequent Collins-era live albums serve the legacy well, but this is the Genesis concert album with which to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Live Recording By Classic Genesis,
The main recording that became ‘Genesis Live’ was never intended for record release, but was actually recorded by the King Biscuit live production company, for radio broadcast (on a show called King Biscuit Flower Hour). However, the band and record label Charisma were so impressed by the quality of the sound achieved by King Biscuits engineers and of the performance, they decided to remix and release a shortened edit of the recording as a live LP, partly to bridge the gap between studio albums (which by todays standards was not that long at all).
The mix is still very good indeed – the drums are prominent, the bass nice and heavy – if a little muddy, the guitars and keyboards well separated – whoever engineered this did an excellent job – and King Biscuit were/are renowned for their high quality productions.

The performance by all is excellent. This is pure classic line-up Genesis, featuring Peter Gabriel on lead vocal and flute, Phil Collins on drums (although the remaster CD wrongly credits sacked drummer John Mayhew, who was frankly rubbish), Tony Banks on keyboards, Mike Rutherford on bass and rhythm guitar, and the wonderful Steve Hackett on guitar (again the CD wrongly credits former member Anthony Phillips on guitar).

For me the standout player is Collins – his energy is relentless throughout, and ‘The Knife’ is taken to a whole new level after Mayhews lacklustre drumming on the studio version a few years earlier. This is Collins showing us and Mayhew how it should be done. Gabriel sings with passion too.

The album does suffer a little from being cut short from the original concert. The band originally wanted a double album to come out, but Charisma were not prepared at that time to foot the bill to invest in a double. It would also have meant that most of one side would have been the epic medley suppers Ready’ which had only recently appeared on their last studio album ‘Foxtrot’, taking up most of side 2. In the end a shortened edit – with a recording of ‘Return Of The Giant Hogweed’ taken from the previous nights concert – was put out.

Still, what we get is an exciting slice of rock history, from a band who neither accepted nor merited the ‘prog rock’ tag (the music was always beyond such categorising), and whose biggest influence at the time was The Beatles. And it shows in terms of the creativity.
A treat if you appreciate classic rock, a must-have if you are into prog rock and absolutely indispensable if you like Genesis.

Genesis Live is the first live album released by rock group Genesis in 1973. It was the bands first top 10 hit in the UK, reaching No.9 and remaining on the charts for 10 weeks.
Genesis were persuaded by their label, Charisma Records, to release Genesis Live as a budget-priced title to mark time while the band recorded Selling England by the Pound in mid-1973. (Contractual obligations to Charismas North American distributor, Buddah Records, may also have been a factor, as Charisma would move its distribution to Atlantic Records shortly before Selling England release.)
The tracks on the album were recorded at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, England by the Pye Mobile Recording Unit, engineer Alan Perkins, on 25 February 1973 except for “Return of the Giant Hogweed”, which was recorded at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England on the previous day, when the band was touring in support of Foxtrot.

Rolling Stone gave the album a brief but positive review, commenting that “this album goes a long way toward capturing the gripping power and mysticism that has many fans acclaiming Genesis as ‘the greatest live band ever.'”
A retrospective review by Allmusic was also resoundingly positive. They remarked “its doubtful that anyone ever got a richer sound out of a Mellotron on-stage than Tony Banks does on this album, and Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins’ playing is all quite amazing as a whole unit, holding together some very complex music in a live setting.” They judged all the recordings to be far superior to their studio originals.

Genesis Live is the first live album from the English rock band Genesis, released on 20 July 1973 on Charisma Records. Initially recorded for radio broadcast on the American rock program King Biscuit Flower Hour, the album is formed from the recordings of shows at Free Trade Hall, Manchester and De Montfort Hall, Leicester in February 1973 during the band’s tour supporting their fourth studio album Foxtrot (1972).

Genesis Live is the band’s first album to enter the top 10 in the UK, reaching No. 9. Following its US release in 1974, it peaked at No. 105.

History
Genesis were persuaded by their label, Charisma Records, to release Genesis Live as a budget-priced title to mark time while the band recorded Selling England by the Pound in mid-1973. The group’s manager, Tony Stratton Smith said that the low price would allow it to be sold in stores such as Woolworths and WHSmith. Genesis Live was issued in the US several months after Selling England’s release, which upset Gabriel as the album included songs from their old live sets and was quickly recorded with little care given to the quality of the recordings. When Gabriel reluctantly agreed to have the album released, part of the deal was that it would not be issued in the US.

The album was recorded when the band was touring in support of Foxtrot, by the Pye Mobile Recording Unit, engineer Alan Perkins; all tracks were recorded at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, England on 25 February 1973 except for “The Return of the Giant Hogweed”, which was recorded at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England on the previous day. These recordings were originally made for the U.S. radio show King Biscuit Flower Hour, though they were never broadcast. John Burns mixed the multi-track tapes in July 1973.

A handful of early radio promotional double-LP test pressings were created which included a 23-minute version of “Supper’s Ready” from the Leicester show. This album’s running order was “Watcher of the Skies”, “The Musical Box”, “Get ‘Em Out by Friday”, “Supper’s Ready”, “The Return of the Giant Hogweed”, “The Knife”, and included between-song patter by Gabriel. “Supper’s Ready” was not included in the officially released version, even though the front cover photograph was taken during a live performance of the song (with Gabriel donning the “Magog” mask). A live recording of “Supper’s Ready” from later that same year was released on 1998’s 4-CD boxed set, Genesis Archive 1967–75. However, Gabriel re-recorded some vocals for that release.

Rolling Stone gave the album a brief but positive review, commenting that “this album goes a long way toward capturing the gripping power and mysticism that has many fans acclaiming Genesis as ‘the greatest live band ever'”.  Genesis Live is a collection of in-concert tracks recorded in early 1973, spotlighting material originally released on Foxtrot and Nursery Chryme. Long a favorite on the import racks, this album goes a long way toward capturing the gripping power and mysticism that has many fans acclaiming Genesis as “the greatest live band ever.” Titles like “Get ‘Em Out by Friday” and “The Return of the Giant Hogweed” tell much about this band’s modus operandi: a strange, visionary moralism highly reminiscent of both Yes and Jethro Tull. Genesis predated both of those bands in audio-visual productions though, and their dues-paying days are well documented by the high degree to which they develop multiple themes on both lyrical and instrumental levels.

A retrospective review by AllMusic was also resoundingly positive. They remarked “it’s doubtful that anyone ever got a richer sound out of a Mellotron on-stage than Tony Banks does on this album, and Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford, and Phil Collins’ playing is all quite amazing as a whole unit, holding together some very complex music in a live setting”. They judged all the recordings to be far superior to their studio originals.
