Review:
Everybody remembers the hits of Marillion; Kayleigh and Lavender have flooded the radio waves for many years. But since the end of the 80s, Fish – their former singer – has followed a solo career. After six albums, Fish has decided to make a point. He re-recorded his best titles and released a double compilation – Yin and Yang.
The title refers to the Asian philosophy that states that wherever there is good, there is also evil and that in bad times, there is always a piece of good fortune.
These two compilations are far from ordinary. Fish, on his own, represents the true spirit of Marillion. Whereas the band goes through an identity crisis and constantly re orientates its musical style, Fish stays on the right line that made him the natural leader of technical and progressive rock.
The production is very neat throughout and, with 26 titles including Institution Waltz, Internal Exile and Just Good Friends re-recorded as a duet with Sam Brown, one can experience all the magic of this fabulous singer who handles his art with so much skill.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Yang” is Classic Fish Re-recorded, and Remixed,
Yang is the companion album to Yin, which together, are a truly `essential’ collection of hits, should-have-been-hits, and classic material from Fishs solo albums as well as those with Marillion, retooled to the artists present standards with his more recent band-mates. Great solo songs such as “Big Wedge” and “Lady Let It Lie” are presented here in a remixed form which they benefit from: theres a bit more kick to them.
There are re-recordings of songs from one of my favourite Fish albums, Internal Exile. “Lucky” and especially “Credo” sound much better than the originals. There is also an early version of the title track from `89, which is a bit more raw, closer to live. “Somebody Special” is not as over-produced as the original, on Suits.

Classic Marillion material has been made Fish-y, and for the better. The version of “Lavender” on Yang is much improved, given more atmosphere, depth, and passion than the original. The new “Kayleigh” is okay, but it was never a favourite song (“Heart Of Lothian” would have suited me better). “Sugar Mice” is good enough, but the new “Punch & Judy” is rip-roaring.

The re-recordings and re-mixes make this less crass than a `hits’ album, but more of a testament to artistic determination.
