Several bands have been unjustifiably compared to the mighty CYNIC. None of these groups have remotely approached the brilliance exhibited on CYNIC’s classic disc Focus. Even the former members of CYNIC have not released anything remotely as interesting as their work on Focus. ESICASTIC has earned the right to justifiably be compared to CYNIC. This Italian band has obviously been heavily influenced by CYNIC’s wonderful synthesis of Technical Death Metal and Jazz Fusion, and I can envision detractors of the band saying that they are too similar to CYNIC. However, I do not see the similarity between the bands as a problem. I see it as a blessing. Finally, a band has come along that has chosen to tackle the CYNIC sound and pull it off incredibly well. Although two of the three songs on Atman bear a strong resemblance to the structure and tone of tunes off of Focus, they are not mere copies. The title track starts the three song demo out, and it is a masterpiece. It has all of the intricacy and masterful riffing and drumming apparent on Focus. The bass lines are perhaps not as complex as Sean Malone’s, but they are damn good. The only significant difference is the vocal delivery which is in the pretty typical gruff Death Metal style along with occasional clean backing vocals. No psychedelic robotic vocals are present on Atman. “”Self Omnipotence”” is a slightly mellower song, but still fits well within the CYNIC style. The last track, “”Sheliphron Destillatorium””, is more along the lines of AGHORA than CYNIC. It is less involved and has a sparser sound than the previous two tunes. Its ethereal vibe makes it my least favorite song on Atman by far. If ESICASTIC can produce a full length release of the quality of the first two tracks on Atman, the future is incredibly bright for the band. A label needs to pick these guys up as soon as possible.
