Eighth Wonder were a British pop band in the 1980s. They formed in 1983 and enjoyed major success in Japan and Italy between 1985 and 1987, before having hit singles in the UK and across Europe in 1988.
“I’m Not Scared” was co-produced and written by the Pet Shop Boys and Phil Harding. “I’m Not Scared” was chosen as the next single for release in Europe. It was greeted with media and public enthusiasm, and “I’m Not Scared” became a Top 10 hit in almost every country in Europe, achieving number one in Italy, number 2 in Switzerland and Portugal, number 3 in Spain, 4 in Greece, 5 in Germany, 7 in the UK, 8 in France and 20 in Austria. Pet Shop Boys recorded their own version of “I’m Not Scared” for their album Introspective.

“I’m Not Scared” is a 1988 song recorded by British pop band Eighth Wonder. It was the first single from the album Fearless and groups fifth single, and was released in 1988. It achieved success in France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and UK, where it was a top ten hit. Written by the Pet Shop Boys, the original version contains several words in French-language. “J’ai pas peur”, the B-side of the vinyl, is the French adaptation of “I’m Not Scared”. The 12″ “disco mix” combines the two versions into one long mix.
Slant Magazine ranked the song 62nd in its 100 Greatest Dance Songs list, adding: “”I’m Not Scared” is unmistakably a Lowe/Tennant composition, with sharp staccato synth lines, a fluctuating bassline, histrionic lyrics ending in curly, figurative question marks (…), and on the extended Disco Version dramatic string stabs”.
Cover versions:
The Pet Shop Boys included their own version of the song on their 1988 album Introspective.
Swedish Pet Shop Boys tribute group West End Girls covered the song for their 2006 debut album Goes Petshopping.
If I could read your mind, I think I’d take a look
I don’t care
Baby, I’m not scared
You’re always telling lies, and that’s the only truth
I don’t care
Baby, I’m not scared
I don’t know why
Oh, take these dogs away from me
Before they, they bite
I thought that, if you paid, you’d keep them off our backs
But I don’t care
Baby, I’m not scared
Where do we have to be, so I can laugh and you’ll be free?
I’d go anywhere
Baby, I don’t care
I’m not scared
I don’t care
Baby, I’m not scared
I don’t know why
Oh, take these dogs away from me
Before they, they bite
Tonight I fought and made my mind up
I know it’s right
I know these dogs still snap around us
But I can, I can fight
I wouldn’t treat me the way you do
If I was you, if I was you
I wouldn’t treat me the way you do – you
If I was you, if I was you
I wouldn’t treat me the way you do
If I was you, if I was you
I wouldn’t treat me the way you do – you
Baby, I don’t care
I’d go anywhere
Baby, I’m not scared
I’m not scared
Oh, I’m not scared
