Their live album, Beast from the East, proves that they possess something other metal groups fail to achieve when performing live — power. Dokken’s energy reaches its peak in the 2LP, especially due to the wildness of George Lynch‘s guitar riffs. This release covers all of the band’s biggest and best hits, along with a new studio track entitled “Walk Away.” For those interested in Dokken, Beast from the East is a must.

Beast from the East is a live album recorded by the American heavy metal band Dokken in Japan in April 1988, during tour in support of their album Back for the Attack. It was released on November 7, 1988. The album features live versions of the band’s most popular songs from previous four studio albums and also includes a new studio track entitled “Walk Away”. The song was accompanied with a music video, which featured members of the band performing atop the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking Topanga Canyon and the Pacific Ocean. The album earned the band their only Grammy Award nomination for the Best Metal Performance in 1990, losing to Metallica’s “One”.

Background
Up to 1988, Dokken had released four studio albums, of which the last three were certified platinum. The band opened for Judas Priest, Aerosmith and several other bands, which eventually gained the band a spot on the Monsters of Rock Tour 1988 festival, where they played with Metallica, Scorpions, Kingdom Come and the headliner, Van Halen. They also recorded a song “Dream Warriors” for the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Prior to the Monsters of Rock fest, the band went on to tour in Japan, where they recorded several shows of the tour. Those recordings were released as their first live album called Beast from the East, with an additional new song called “Walk Away”. While not as successful as the band’s previous release, Back for the Attack, Beast from the East entered Billboard Top 40, achieving gold certificate. In 1990, it was nominated to the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, the only Dokken album to receive one. However, the band was involved in controversy when Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, who was in direct competition with Dokken in the “Metal” category stated, “I have no idea why they call Dokken metal and put them in the same category we’re in.” To date, Beast from the East is the last Dokken album to receive a certification by RIAA.

Dokken was really good; as a live act, they were hard for headliners to follow, having honed their craft over years of pretty much constant touring. Recorded in various spots in Japan, BEAST FROM THE EAST shows off their strengths, and does so with the encouragement of a few thousand fans screaming their approval.

“Unchain the Night” opens the album. Lynch’s guitar creates a violent churn that singer Dokken rides with an aggressive vocal, both indicating the band means business. Their soundtrack hit “Dream Warriors” (who can forget Dokken vs. Freddy Krueger in the song’s video?) is delivered more or less note-for-note, while “Kiss of Death” is slightly sped up and decidedly rougher around the edges than in its studio version – just what the song needs.

The band clears the lane for Lynch on the instrumental “Mr. Scary,” and he obliges with a clinic on finger-tapping and dive-bombing – it’s ‘80s Guitar Hero 101, and Lynch scorches everything in his path. The album is also back-loaded with the band’s hits – “Alone Again,” “Breaking the Chains,” “In My Dreams” and “Just Got Lucky” close the record with enough fist-in-the-air, lighter-worthy moments, you might just wish for mullets to make a comeback. The chorus of “Alone Again,” in particular, is still as goosebump-inducing as ever.

BEAST FROM THE EAST  takes you back to a moment where this band reached for the golden ring, and showed it had the power to take it.

video review:

Beast from the East is a live hard rock album Dokken recorded in Japan in April 1988, during Dokken Back for the Attack album tour. Released on November 16, 1988. The album has live versions of the band most popular songs and includes a studio track entitled “”Walk Away””.

5.0 out of 5 stars  At Their Pinnacle. This double live album shows the band at their peak, and it satisfies both perspectives of the live album critic. It sounds good enough to please those who want a concert to be “like the record” and also gives us more. The real gem here is how George Lynch stretches out on the guitar. The rhythm guitar is fluid, serpentine, and slips in and out of the lead whether it be fills or a full solo. The solos are extended without just repeating the same licks ad nauseam. He actually gets creative and is full of surprises, not just playing off the rhythm, but the melody and harmony as well, with his always unique phrasing. I honestly think that with this live album he joins the pantheon of guitar greats.

The vocals are spot on and there are also some interesting vocal harmonies here and there. The rhythm section is solid and “going with the flow”. Whether the band were getting along or not, these performances are very heartfelt and moving. Alas, the lone studio track at the end, Walk Away, feels like a farewell – nothing lasts forever! Let’s all thank our lucky stars that the band left us this awesome document.

My enthusiasm applies to the 1988 vinyl release. Some CD packages omit some of the songs and the digital transfer does not do the audio justice.

P.S. Spoiler Alert: There are two very special tracks, one being the unaccompanied intro to Mr. Scary. The other is Just Got Lucky – how many rock guitarists can give you goosebumps ending a song on a major seventh? George Lynch!

I loved this double LP
Just look at the list of songs – pretty much ALL Dokken best songs ever. And I remember it sounding great and just great versions of these songs.
