Dead Heaven Cowboys roars out of the gate like it was ten years earlier, delivering a dirty slab of grunge-metal that would have been the toast of Seattle at one time. But unlike many of the bands that followed in the wake of that scene, Dead Heaven Cowboys manages to stand out with a few important elements. First of all, the slurred heroin moan that many groups have utilized since Layne Staley made it vogue is absent here, replaced with the impassioned yelps of Chris Chamberlayne. His harsh cry is a pleasing alternative to the droning approach utilized by many of the bands contemporaries. But the gloom of Dead Heaven Cowboys’ lyrics comes second to the gritty riffs that carry that message. By placing the molten guitar work ahead of everything else, the band allows the music to revolve around the awesome winding riffs of Mick Gunnup. The crisp production (from drummer Jim Strickler) definitely helps things, showcasing the groups strong points appropriately. But the band has brought some good songs to its début, and should be commended for delivering such a strong first impression. Fans of classic grunge may want to give this a shot; this is an excellent chunk of metal that offers memorable riffs and catchy hooks.
Conversations in the Flood marks the début release for DHC and includes fan favorites such as Its Not Real, Skulls and Bumblebees, Cars, Whos Your Daddy? and The Ballad of Ron Jeremy. Take equal parts Gary Oldman, Fight Club, Hunter Thompson, Halloween, Bukowski, True Romance, Jenna Jameson, The Buck Pets,Jack Nicholson and Simon Bisely, add ice and blend vigorously until pured. If you can choke this combo down you might have some idea of what this band is like.
