Formed in 1986 and based in Birmingham the early Dawn After Dark were heavily influenced by bands such as Death Cult and these influences showed heavily on their first demos… Relentless gigging and general badgering brought them to the attention of Chapter 22 Records and London based Metropolis music, who became the bands management… 1987 saw the band traverse the UK as headliners and as support act to New Model Army, Ghost Dance, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Swans and the Rose of Avalanche… 1988 saw the release of Crystal High on Chapter 22 Records and saw the band tour with Fields of the Nephilim on the mark of the watchman tour. Crystal High sold out in the first week of the Nephilim Tour and ‘Dawners’ T shirts appeared everywhere… 1988 saw the release of The Groove and more tours followed with Balaam and the Angel, Living Colour, Gaye Bikers on Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, The Wonderstuff. The Groove appeared in the indie charts and the band appeared in full page spreads/interviews in Kerrang and numerous fanzines. To top it all Dawn After Dark appeared it the top 20 best new bands in Sounds music poll of 1988. ..1989 started to see the demise of the ‘alternative’ scene and in a bid to survive the changes Dawn After Dark rightly or wrongly started to change their sound and a heavier influence came in… 1989 saw the release of Maximum overdrive and gigs with The Dogs D’Amour, All About Eve and touring with Wolfsbane followed. Dawn after dark headlined and filled venues such as the Marquee and Irish Centre in Birmingham. The press coverage was widespread and with the ever supporting Dawn Losers in tow Dawn After Dark gigged more than ever before.

A Birmingham based Gothic Rock band. DAWN AFTER DARKs frontman was none other than Howard Johnson, a journalist for ‘Kerrang!’ magazine, who paraded his alter ego under the nom de plume of ‘H’. The act was assembled during 1987 with H being joined by lead guitarist GEORGE CRAIG, rhythm guitar player Richard Bardsley, bassist David Askey and drummer Tony Henderson. Signing to Chapter 22 Records DAWN AFTER DARK traversed the UK that first year as headliners and on numerous support tours, sharing stages with the likes of BALAAM AND THE ANGEL, ALL ABOUT EVE, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, POP WILL EAT ITSELF and WONDERSTUFF. The schedule continued into the following year guesting for DOGS D’AMOUR and LIVING COLOR. In 1989 a further headline trek was bolstered by a further nationwide set of dates opening for WOLFSBANE.

Johnson quit the group in 1990 and was eventually replaced by one Johnny Stevenson for a short British tour in July of that year. Upon completion of these gigs George Craig decamped and the band folded. Stevenson would later front KILL CITY DRAGONS. Since he departed, Howard Johnson has worked in other areas of the music industry including stints with the RCA / BMG press office, Sanctuary Management, ‘Raw’ magazine and was the deputy editor of ‘Total Sport’ magazine at one point. Guitarist GEORGE CRAIG went solo, subsequently issuing a single silent Scream’ on Drag Records. Johnny Stevenson relocated to New Mexico in the USA to create solo project SCORPIO 67. DAWN AFTER DARK drummer Tony Henderson established PIGFISH in alliance with former BROOKLYN DOGS guitarist Russ Frame, releasing a string of albums through Iron Man Records. Henderson also operates with Punk band INTENTION.
