5.0 out of 5 stars Sadly the last studio effort from Budgie,
Still unmistakably Budgie, but with a slightly different sound – perhaps due to the keyboards, perhaps a more modern mix. Not a dud track, but haunting Flowers in the Attic is my firm favourite. I met Shelly after their concert at Marquee while promoting this album and he spoke of future plans. Sadly this remains the last “proper” album and only numerous compilations are a proof that Budgie fans are still out there…
5.0 out of 5 stars
Great disc by Budgie that I am proud to finally add to my LP collection. The band continues to rock in what would prove to be their final studio LP, although I would still like more! As always Budgie fills a disc with excitement and fun. Great tunes in this are “Bored With Russia”, “Don’t Cry”, “Give Me the Truth”, and “Allison”. Get this….theres even a string ensemble on “Flowers in the Attic”, which by the way is my favorite from this disc. Its amazing to listen to everything out by Budgie again on LP finally and still not understand why they never broke over the top. Don’t wonder, pick this up, or, cry when it is no longer available and one of your friends plays it for you!
5.0 out of 5 stars Budgies last flight!,
A lot of old school BUDGIE fans practically hate this album but to me ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ is an amazing disc with very few weak points. But then again, I grew up on post-Tony Bourge era Budgie and 70s Budgie sounded weird to me when I first heard those albums (but came to love them later on).
Yes, ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ is a far cry from the raw proto metal and weirdo song titles of the early BUDGIE records. Instead Burke Shelley and Co. deliver a first rate melodic hard rock album I rate as the best of the 3 John Thomas era releases. ‘Power Supply’ was almost shockingly basic and quite one-dimensional, ‘Nightflight’ a much more dynamic effort with better songwriting, and ‘Deliver Us…’ their most refined album with many terrific songs courtesy of the Shelley/Thomas axis who combine for 7 of the 10 tunes here.
Things kick off with the infectious AOR tinged ‘Bored with Russia’ (originally penned by 80s mega producer Beau Hill for his band Airborne and finally issued as part of ‘The Dig’ archives release in 2003) before the band unleash ‘Don’t Cry’, a 3-minute barnburner, which climaxes in a blazing back-and-forth duel between John Thomas’ red hot axe and the flying fingers of keyboardist Duncan Mackay whose presence adds a whole new dimension to the BUDGIE sound (much like Darren Wharton did with Thin Lizzy on ‘Renegade’). The menacing ‘Truth Drug’ is another highlight topped off by a smoking John Thomas solo; the man has never sounded better than on ‘Deliver Us…’ – great tone, too! But the albums pièce de résistance just might be the grandiose ‘Flowers In The Attic’, a truly epic piece of music with classical connotations, faux strings ‘n all. I’d kill to see this masterpiece performed with a real orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall!
The prog-ish ‘N.O.R.A.D. (Doomsday City)’ is very cleverly shifting piece, conveying the urgency of the topic at hand (with Duncans keyboards mimicking morse code in the breakdown!), while ‘Give Me The Truth’ is a convincing mid-paced stomper with some of Burkes most energetic vocals and more JT guitar wickedness (licking out boogie-style with Duncan at the end!) – a stark contrast to the spacey, synth driven ‘Alison’ (with Burke sounding eerily close to John Lennon at times…) which is the odd tune out on ‘Deliver Us…’. The storming ‘Hold On To Love’ is a relentless, take-no-prisoners rocker and closes things out on a high note.
The same can be said of BUDGIEs recording career – ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ delivers the goods and then some. Don’t let the naysayers tell you otherwise!
