Description

BROKE N BLUE: Northern Light CD. The strong debut album from the Swedish AOR/Melodicrock band with both female/male vocals. A mix of Heart, Roxette, Richard Marx, Journey, Toto etc. Considered a rare AOR pearl and sold out

Perfect melodic hard rock / A.O.R two very good lead singers. This album captures the essence of Scandinavian melodic hard rock / AOR.
BROKE N BLUE is a band with a sound similar to this of Heart, Roxette, Bryan Adams, Toto, Journey, Boston and Asia that has two very good lead singers Eva Eggesjo-Abrahamsson (with a voice close to Heart’s Ann Wilson) and Peter Gustavsson (who sounds like Jimi Jamison). The leader of the band is Lars Abrahamsson, who wrote all the (12) songs and also plays guitar and keyboards. Last but not least we have drummer / bassist Ulf Vestlund who also co-produced
the album. The band lives in middle Sweden, around a small village called Kolsva, 150 km from Stockholm. The album is full of big hit singles like “”Enuff””, “”Oriental eyes”” (the best song in my opinion a real anthem), as well as minor hits like “”I will be there, Cry for you””, Needed to believe, Touching me, Heaven in my hands (has an Eva & Peter duet). This is a band that cries out to be signed by a big label and promoted properly. For the time being Maple Leaf Records handle the distribution in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the album sells through small companies / mail orders etc. and through the internet. You can -and you should if you are a melodic hard rock / AOR fan- buy the CD directly from the band.

What the band have up their collective sleeves is an ear for melody, a contrasting vocal approach with either Eva or Peter singing, and great songs. Yes, songs… the epicentre of any album. Without it, any artist would amount to nothing. Kudos goes to the man behind it all Lars Abrahamsson. I feel the mix of songs assembled here is near perfect, with a host of new ones too! Broke[N]Blue’s sound has firmly cemented itself in the middle lane of the melodic rock/pop market. With Eva’s vocals in particular, the band I feel can become a real contender to corner that market left behind by the likes of SarayaHeart and Roxette and euro hit machines like Michael Learns To Rock. They easily straddle that fence, making the entry into the melodic rock market seem easy, with Lar’s fluid but sonic guitar style and pulse laden songs being the catalyst for it all..

The Songs
‘I Will Be There’ is a great opener, and a taster for things to come. Eva’s effortless vocal is particularly good here. Echoes of Heart‘s ‘There’s The Girl’ off the ‘Bad Animals’ opus springs forth on a new track ‘Cry For You’. ‘Touching Me Tonight’ is also another newie, which zooms into Roxette‘s commercial range, whereas ‘Enuff’ has the entire AOR recipe thrown together in 4 and half minutes.. utterly superb! Of course some of their tracks which have had prior air-time make up some of the space on the album, ‘Needed To Believe’ shows you just how bad-ass rockers they can be, but still the polish is there a la Jeff Paris, plus there’s the subtle brilliance of ‘Heaven In My Hands’ where Peter shines out upfront, as well as the upbeat ‘Heart 2 Heart’. They show another side with the title track ‘Northern Light’ which has all the ambience and atmosphere of an Iona track. Tell me there’s not a song here that will appeal to a wide range of melodic rockers, regardless of what end of the spectrum they reside. Making a decision to opt for an opening single off the album is a hard one, considering there’s so many to choose from. However I suspect ‘I Will Be There’ or ‘Enuff’ may be the strongest contenders.

In Summary
For an indie effort this should be an inspiration as to how well it can be done on limited resources, and in this day and age I’m inclined to encourage the efforts of bands such as Broke[N]Blue  to fly the flag of new-breed melodic rock. Get tuned in to Broke[N]Blue now, as this is well worth the investment for the future of melodic rock. Leave the MP3’s alone, get the real kaboodle. Go to it people, and well done to Lars, Eva, Peter and Ulf for realising the original promise.

excellent hard rock by this swedes with loads of catchy tunes that will grab you on first listen and that’s something that i can guarantee you!!.another plus that i see on this band its that the lead vocals are shared between Eva & peter and that makes the album flow much easier on the listener and makes it more varied too.if i had to describe this band i would say that a mixture of heart with treat would be a close description.also the production is quite good for an indie release. i enjoyed

You listen to the first keyboard sounds of “”I will be there””, the first riff gets you off the ground… and then….. just boredom. Alone the voice is somewhat mixed up relaxing with boring I think. Who is a Scandinavian or female AOR completest must have this anyway. It’s not that bad, but not good enough for me to keep

Well, I think I just change my mind… just a bit. If you’re in the right mood, it’s a “”85″”. If not so, it’s just a “”80″”. But never something exceptional. Musically it’s FAR better than “”voicecally””. This to keep as a solid statement from me
