Description

(This is a promo release; the sticker on the back says “not for sale”)

A year before This Is Spinal Tap was released, Bad News made their debut on the BBC comedy series The Comic Strip Presents… This spoof heavy metal band featured vocals and lead guitar by Adrian Edmondson (also known as Vivian Basterd of The Young Ones.) Actually the entire band was really the Young Ones in disguise (with the exception of drummer Spider Webb, played by Peter Richardson who turned down the role of Mike on the Young Ones series.) This single and all the songs on their self titled LP are produced by Queen guitarist Brian May.

Bad News is rather unknown outside of the UK. Bad News are actually the comedians known as The Young Ones (from the British television cult humour series with the same name). It’s very similar in nature as that other spoof band Spinal Tap except for the fact that for the members of Bad News it wasn’t their sole claim to fame. Television comedy series were their main activity, and the dimwitted members of Bad News were just one of their alter personas. If you want to learn more about the band, read the Wiki page.

Cashing In On Christmas by Bad News with Brian May on guitar. Released as a single in 1987. Produced by Brian May (Queen guitarist).

Lyrics:

Cashing in on Christmas
Hear those cash tills ring
Jingle bells make money
Everybody sing

Queuing up at Woolworths
To get our Christmas hits
With lots of peace and love and joy and
Jingle bells on it
This is our Christmas single
Please make it number one
And give us all your money
To make our Christmas fun

Cashing in on Christmas
Hear those cash tills ring
Jingle bells make money
Everybody sing

Cos’ we are rockin’
Ooh every Christmas we’re rockin’
Say Santa Claus and we are rockin’
Ooh jingle bells and we’re rockin’
Well every Christmas we’re rockin’, we’re rockin all the way to the bank

Cashing in on Christmas
Hear those cash tills ring
Jingle bells make money
Everybody sing

I want to wake up on Christmas morning
With the snow all over the ground
With Bad News’ Christmas single in my stocking
It only costs just over a pound

Hello, this is Den Dennis
I hope you’re all having a very merry Christmas
This is our Christmas single, please buy it and make it number one
For our Christmas fun

Hello everybody, its Vim Fuego here,
Sorry I can’t be with you this Christmas
But I’m in the Carribean with all your money
Having a good drink and a laugh
Have a nice one, merry Christmas

Cashing in on Christmas
Christmas girls and boys
Cashing in on Christmas
Lets make lots of noise

Cos’ we are rockin’
Well every Christmas we’re rockin’
Say Santa Claus and we are rockin’
Ooh jingle bells and we’re rockin’
Well every Christmas we’re rockin’, we’re rockin all the way to the bank

Cashing in on Christmas
Christmas girls and boys
Cashing in on Christmas
Lets make lots of noise

Cashing in on Christmas
Christmas girls and boys
Cashing in on Christmas
Lets make lots of noise
(Repeat to end)

Hello everyone this is Colin Grigson
Please give as generously as you can to Bad News this Christmas, because, remember,
There are people in the world who are much better at spending your money than you are,
And thats us. Ha ha, ha, ha, merry Christmas!

Hello, I’m Spider Webb. Heh heh heh!

Saxon’s Biff Byford: I liked Spinal Tap… but Bad News was better

And although Biff said he enjoyed Spinal Tap, there’s another movie he prefers when it comes to a sideways look at the music business.

Biff said: “I thought the film was great. We went to a screening with a load of other bands, and some of them walked out. I’m not going to tell you which ones – some of them are my friends.

“As we watched, I could tell straight away that the bass player was based on Dawson. But for me, Spinal Tap was too American. I liked Bad News better.

“It was that totally British thing and they absolutely nailed it. ‘I’m not getting back in the van until you say we’re heavy metal!’

“There’s more of every British band from the 80s in Bad News. I try to watch it at least twice a year, it’s so fucking brilliant.”
