Overlooked Genius
If you want 80s Hard rock at its greatest, this is it! Superb melodies, stunning harmonies, power chords and delicate keyboards. A strong vocal and driving rhythm section make this a stand out album of the period. Kerrang! magazine gave it five stars, but straight after the band split up. A great loss of what could have been one of the great British melodic rock bands. Wipes the floor with Def Leppard and soars beyond the likes of UFO.

In year 1987, Rob Armitage was offered the singers position in German Metal legends ACCEPT after Udo Dirkschneiders departure to pursue a solo career. Assuming BABY TUCKOO was equally heavy and razorsharp I was shocked obtaining and listening to the English outfits First Born debut, not because of its quality but solely due to the completely different style. Then ACCEPTs Eat The Heat LP hit the stores in 1989 (without Armitage behind the mic) and everything was clear.

BABY TUCKOO belong(ed) to the hardrockin/melodic side of the British Metal(?) school. With only two LP releases under their belt (First Born) they did not make it to a wider audience, apart from some average success in their home country maybe. Its not clear if the bands breakup was a result of Rob Armitage leaving for Germany but, in any way, if you ever have the chance to listen to the couple of albums the Bradford, West Yorkshire based quintet put out in the 80s you may agree the band had much of a potential for a commercial breakthrough.

A little less heavier than the 1984 debut, while looking forward to the American market (even if virtually no other English band apart from DEF LEPPARD succeeded in storming the USA territory those days), Force Majeure is a fine example of melodic British Hard Rock with a strong 80s arena Rock touch. The vocals of Rob Armitage are fat and passionate sounding like a mix of David Coverdale, Michael Bolton and Sammy Hagar while the overall musical style of BABY TUCKOO in this LP is a mix of bluesy British rock mixed with some AOR/FM Rock layers, resulting in an interesting track list led by rockin guitars and vintage keyboards. Rock (Rock) was released as the albums first single and paved the way for a nice-to-listen-to whole album fans of bands like WHITESNAKE, MAMAS BOYS, VAN HALEN, ARGENT, MAGNUM and (some of) MARILLION would surely enjoy.

So, if you never had the chance to purchase this album or would just like to familiarize with this band with the weird name, Force Majeure surely is value for money. If I had to choose between this and their 1984 debut, Id dare saying First Born was even better though.

Excellent release by this British band that somehow did not get the attention it deserved and only recorded 2 albums back in the 80s…the songs are into some kind of Gary Moores “Corridors Of Power” Whitesnake “Slide It In” and Uriah Heeps “Raging Silence” and “Different World”(3 british bands by coincidence).”Rock Rock” is a good song, solid and with a good chorus,”Shoot On Sight” is a hard driven hard rocking track “Over You” AORish,a good song “Falling Star” is a great song with a nice chorus “The Lights Go Down” is a Hard AOR track,a very good one,”Keep It Together” is just wonderful then “Maybe” which is a nice ballad,”I’m Your Man” is another goodie “Promises” is an excellent track kinda bluesy rock.
buy it eyes closed!

Good singer, good cover, good opener

Mas que disco promedio para mí, gran HardRock Melódico en donde tienen sus toques AOR con esos teclados bien bonitos y arreglos en los coros muy buenos como en “Long Way Down” o en “Promises” con ese inicio con aires a Journey o esas teclas iniciales en “I’m Your Man”(Red Dawn) o “Maybe”(asia). Tremendo inicio con “Rock Rock” o la AORera/MHR “Over You” mis favoritas.

Maybe me recuerda en demasía a Only time will tell de Asia. “I’m your man” es otro tema al estilo Y&T, al igual que Long way down.

I must tell you that I have been satisfied with the acquisition. I am referring to the last album by the British Baby Tuckoo, a band from Bradford that released two albums in the mid-80s, First Born and this one that concerns me today.

At that time the group consisted of Rob Armitage on vocals – the man who was chosen to replace Udo Dirkschneider after his departure from Accept in 87 and ultimately scrapped in favor of David Reece – Neil Saxton on lead guitar, Tony Sugden on drums, Paul Smith on bass and Andrew Barrott on guitar and keyboards. And together with producer Liam Sternberg they went to the Rockfield studios to record this second work for Music for nations, an album with a cover by Chris Wade.

The album begins with a Spanish guitar and some keyboards that serve as an introduction to “Rock (Rock)”, a melodic hard rock that reminds me of Meniketti and company in its softest side. Great song.
“Shoot on sight” is pure hard rock, energetic, fast and with a good solo from Saxton that also sounds like Y&T.
“Over you” follows the same trend, although here – perhaps because of those keyboards – they remind me more of modern UFOs. “Falling star” is more well-executed classic hard rock and “The lights go down” another example of the same, this time with a greater predominance of keyboards.

The second side begins with “Keep it together”, very similar to the previous one, more than acceptable. Maybe reminds me too much of Only time will tell from Asia. “I’m your man” is another Y&T-style song, just like Long way down. And with “Promises” they put an end to the album by giving us a very interesting melodic approach to blues rock, with a perfect guitar and Hammond-sounding keyboards accompanied by choirs that give the song an original Gospelian patina.

In short, a highly recommended album by a semi-unknown band that, if you like hard rock from the 80s, you must have in your collection.
