Baby Animals – Early Warning (official video clip):

Their eponymous debut album Baby Animals was released in September 1991. The album debuted at number six on the ARIA Charts and spent six weeks at number one, eventually going eight times platinum and becoming the highest-selling debut Australian rock album of all time (until the release of Jet’s album 12 years later). The Baby Animals f@#$ off rock n roll attitude and relentless live performance ethic earned them the respect of the Australian Music industry and the big three at the 1992 ARIA AWARDS:  Best Debut Album, Best Single, and Best Album.

Suze DeMarchi left for London to pursue a solo career in pop, singing cheery Stock, Aitken, Waterman type fare, only to discover what she knew all along, that she was neither a solo nor a pop artist.
It was in London that she met John Woodruff who instantly recognised a quality in her that he wanted to work with. He heard some of her songs and offered to back her financially in the putting together of a band of her own.
DeMarchi recruited drummer Frank Celenza, who suggested bassist Eddie Parise, and it didn’t take them long for them to find Dave Leslie on guitar.
When it came time to working on the debut album, they struck gold securing expat Aussie Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro, The Sweet) as producer. His reputation for working bands hard in the studio didn’t faze the fledgling Perth group.
“He’s the Commander,” DeMarchi told RockWired. “I quite like that.
“He really made you work hard. He really made you put your head down and get to it and he really got the most out of you that you could possibly give. That’s his real craft.”

It was Chapman’s idea to take the lyric ‘Too young to know, too old to listen’ from the chorus of ‘Early Warning’ and make it a powerful, strident declaration right at the outset of the song.
“He’s [Chapman] really good with hooks and stuff but he’s also really good at making you do the best that you possibly can,” DeMarchi said in the Baby Animals’ 2017 documentary.
“We did a lot of takes. I remember that. Once he got it, he knew that it was right and he was pretty adamant about it. I loved working with Mike. He was really great. I learned a lot from him.”
The band’s most successful single went through a major transformation in Chapman’s hands.
‘One Word’ was a song DeMarchi had written in London and the early demo was very country flavoured. But the keen-eared producer could hear potential in the chorus and kept the band working the song over and over until it was right.

In the end though DeMarchi was still unconvinced of the song’s worth.
“‘One Word’ was my least favourite song on the album and I begged the label to not even put it on the record!” she explained to May the Rock Be With You.
“I remember when Dave was recording the intro guitar part how frustrated he was but he played it ’til his fingers bled and it really made the whole track come alive.
“Now, I love looking over at Dave’s face whenever we start this song and have a private giggle in memory of that day and grateful that, once again, the label didn’t listen to me!
“It went on to become one of the most memorable and successful Baby Animals tracks ever and I love playing it.”
Thirty years on from when they first formed, Baby Animals are still pulling big crowds who joyfully shout the lyrics of most of this self titled album back to them.

Moreover, it’s obvious that the band [now with Dario Bortolin on bass and Mick Skelton on drums] is still getting a huge kick out of playing these songs which ooze plenty of attitude and youthful vigour.
“I think that’s a testament to that album; those songs and [producer] Mike Chapman,” DeMarchi explained to Interviews/Reviews.
“He very rigidly made us pull things back and just concentrate on the essence of the song rather than being fancy.”
As a leader, DeMarchi is as magnetic and charismatic as she’s ever been, and clearly, completely in her element on stage.
“I feel really sexy when I sing,” DeMarchi told Chris Bath on ABC Evenings.
“It makes me feel sexy to be in a band and when I sing a song that I love, it makes me feel good, so if that translates, whatever way, that’s cool, [but] I don’t think there’s anything remotely sexy about me to be honest with you.
“For me it’s all about the group, not just about the singer.
“I just can’t believe that people still come to our shows. I always look out in the audience and think ‘Wow, all these people here, this is incredible.'”

5.0 out of 5 stars In your face rock!,
A superb example of ‘in your face’ Australian rock, this debut album dominated the local chart before heading international. Baby Animals went on to play [very loudly!] as support band for some of the biggest named world artists on their respective world tours, including Bryan Adams and Van Halen. Not to be played quietly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Oz rock,
If you like some good punchy rock, then this tight debut album is for you. Coming to Oz for the first time from stuffy ol’ Blighty, I was delighted to come across some solid sounds and I I have listened to them ever since (15 years ago).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best damn band you’ve never heard!,
Hand-picked by Van Halen to open for them on a leg of their 1991-1992 U.S. tour, Australia’s Baby Animals released two killer albums from 1991 to 1993, before their record label imploded and tied the band up in legal hassles for several years. This one, their self-titled debut album, sounds polished and raw at the same time. Vocalist/guitarist Suze DeMarchi is one of the greatest female rock vocalists of her generation. This record is all killer, no filler. Sample some of the tracks if you don’t believe me. Their fan base following in the Land Down Under was phenomenal, winning them countless awards and stellar record sales. In their short recording career they produced only this debut and a follow-up called “”Shaved and Dangerous””. There are/were even Baby Animals tribute bands in Australia! C’mon, now! Name ANY other band who achieved such a fanatical following to merit TRIBUTE BANDS after putting out only 2 records! Are you starting to get the picture? It has been over 10 years since this record came out (and coming up on 10 years since “”Shaved and Dangerous”” was released) and I still listen to the Baby Animals regularly. DeMarchi released a solo disc in 1999 called “”Telelove””. Buy that one, too. The rest of the world needs to realize that Australia is producing some GREAT rock and roll bands!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my faves,
Baby animals eponymous was (and is) one of my favorite albums from the early ’90s. From the single (and not a bad video, either)””Painless”” through the other ten tracks, I like every single song on this album; I can’t say that about more than 15 or 20 other Albums I own. Anyone looking for good pop with a hard rock edge should be happy with this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Band Rocks!!!And Suzie Is Pretty HOT Too!!!
I just love this album which was recorded back in 1991 and still sounds as fresh today as it was back then. Good Hard Rock albums are hard to find and this one is a gem. Suzie DeMarchi belts out such classics as “”One Word”” and “”Early warning”” with her unique hard hitting vocal style and she is backed by heavily overdriven guitars on these two tracks. This album proves that Rock is indeed Eternal and Timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard Rock Fans Need This Album!
When i first picked up this album i thought it was a greatest hits! Then to find out that they only made 2 albums, and this was the debut album only made me rush to hear there second, which disappointed me 🙁
This album is terrific!
Don’t think that women can not rock and make great albums and not just a couple of songs, because this album is a must have…. i notice Shaved And Dangerous is higher rated… but ignore that, this is a must have album for hard rockers! And she will become one of your favorite female rockers! Take my word on it! The whole album rocks and look at the price???? you r getting a bargain!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars gone but not forgotten,
I was fortunate to learn about the baby animals when their debut
CD came out,Painless was the first single,I ran to the music store and I don’t run for anything unless I get goosebumps. Suzie
sings her heart out.Every song kicks, diversified in every way.The band is one of the tightest outfits I ever heard.Guitar solo madness,Dave Leslie is fabulous,Eddie Parisi playing amazing bass, drums. Then there is their second release Shaved and Dangerous in my opinion it is better than the debut,Be my friend,Love Lies, every song this band plays rocks, never gets boring, just go buy them both, you will thank me,two words that say it all, musicianship and feel…these disks are hard to find so get them while you can…Rich

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like your rock n roll snarly….cop this,
Having seen Baby Animals go from pub band in Perth to international stars all i can say is if you like your rock n roll snarly then this is the one for you. Suzi de Marchi will twist you ’round her little finger, while the rest of the band keeps it tight and pounding. Not a dud track on this album, definitely five star material

5.0 out of 5 stars I just heard this song on the radio,
The ‘Baby Animals’ rock hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Favorite Band; a Favorite Album
I’m a boomer, and most of the music I like is classic rock. I accidentally caught Baby Animals in a video on MTV one day and they knocked my socks off, unlike the mostly rhythm-type bands out there in recent years (as I perceive them). Then, I accidentally caught them on Letterman one night, and loved them there also (so did David). I bought this album and it has been a favorite of mine ever since, along with “”Shaved and Dangerous”” which is even better. The music is sensational, and that’s all that matters.
