Description

“Sign of the Gypsy Queen” is a song written and originally recorded by Lorence Hud. The song became a hit in Canada when released as a single in 1973. Hud’s version appeared on his eponymous debut album. The song reached the top 5 on the West Coast, #3 on CJRW-FM in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, and peaked at #16 nationally on the RPM 100 chart.
April Wine version:
April Wine had more success with a hard rock version of the song in 1981. It was the second single from their album The Nature of the Beast. The song reached #40 on the Canadian Hot 100, and #57 in the United States on the Billboard Hot 100, and #19 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks.
This version has become popular on album-oriented rock radio stations, getting frequent airplay in the United States and Canada. A music video aired on MTV’s first day of broadcast. It remains one of the group’s signature songs and a live concert staple. The song has since been recorded by other artists.

April Wine is a Canadian rock band formed in 1969. According to the band, they chose the name ‘April Wine’ simply because members thought the two words sounded good together. The band went on to release more than twenty albums and forge a live performance reputation that still sees them drawing devoted crowds across Canada and around the world more than forty years after taking their first steps into the hard rock spotlight.
Their album titled Harder … Faster lived up to its name with classic tracks like “Say Hello” and “I Like to Rock”. Both were popular hits on both sides of the border and Harder … Faster proved to be yet another multi-platinum release for the band. It would stay on the Billboard top album chart for 40 weeks. The supporting tour for the album began as an opening slot for Nazareth on their national tour across the United States. Most promoters across the U.S. were blown away by the pairing of the two veteran bands and most felt that April Wine could easily have carried the tour as headliners. In their first decade, April Wine had gone from massive national success to international stardom.

The pride of Halifax, Nova Scotia, April Wine scored a few hits on the AOR charts in the early 80s and actually had a bit of longevity their first hit was in 1972, and their last was in 1993.
As the followup single to ballad Just Between You and Me, the harder-rocking Sign of the Gypsy Queen hit #19 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #57 on the Pop Singles chart in 1981. The name of the album was Nature of the Beast (#26, Pop Albums).
I was hoping for an 80s cheesetastic concept video that which would actually FEATURE the titular Gypsy Queen, outfitted with a kick-ass shawl and an ominous crystal ball as she sat upon her throne, complete with smoke, fire, white-winged doves, obedient Gypsy slaves, a post-apocalyptic setting, etc. Maybe something similar to the early-80s output of Blue Oyster Cult (Burnin for You, Dancin in the Ruins), or mid-80s Heart (How Can I Refuse). Evidently April Wine didn’t like literal interpretations of its songs and only did performance clips, so the Gypsy Queen remains a mystery

Lyrics
Lightning smokes on the hillrise
Brought the man with the warning light
Shouting loud ;you had better fly;
While the darkness can help you hide
Troubles comin without control
No ones stayin thats got a hope
Hurricane at the very least
In the words of the gypsy queen
Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go
Get my saddle and tie it on
Western wind who is fast and strong
Jump on back, hes good and long
Well resist till we reach the dawn
Running seems like the best offense
Staying just dont make any sense
No one could ever stop it now
Show the cards of the gypsy town
Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go
Shadows movin without a sound
>From the hold of the sleepless town
Evil seems to be everywhere
Heed the spirit that brought despair
Troubles comin without control
No ones stayin thats got a hope
Hurricane at the very least
In the words of the gypsy queen
Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go
Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go
Sign of the gypsy queen
Pack your things and leave
Word of a woman who knows
Take all your gold and you go
