Renowned these days for the mainstream success of the movie Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, the Toronto band were embraced during the NWoBHM era, and went on to become one of the major influences on the burgeoning thrash movement. Albums like Hard N Heavy, Metal On Metal and Forged In Fire were very much a blueprint for what Metallica et al went on to achieve.

Sheer power = Hard  & Heavy well, when it was being recorded and mixed during the latter part of 1980, it may have seemed so by some, but the fact of it is the Canadians’ debut is hardly a steep ascent to massive heaviness. Granted, there are the rare moments when the band’s untapped power actually manages to pull past some material written by mainstreamers Ozzy, Motley Crue, Kix, and Dokken as well as barely acknowledged to unknown rivals like Saxon, Angelwitch, Raven, and Loudness, but when comparing it to Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead, its just not too feasible an opinion. Venom  debut is like an angry Triceratops storming a village compared to this.
Having already been ignited by the following year’s Metal on Metal album, I expected (hoped for) something akin to its mostly stormy sound.  School Love  and its up-tempo momentum create one riff in particular found tailgating the chorus that can rupture most children in a crosswalk. Another livelier than average tune is I Want You Both (With Me), and while aggression isn’t its middle name, it’s an acceptable build-up to the deluge of  Bedroom Game , a song with the strength and momentum matching that of  Mothra  but with a much more conventional topical motif. The last tracks on the lp,  Hot Child  and â Bondage , can be mentioned favorably, fairly vibrant and peppy for the course. Before W.A.S.P. decided to dip the brush, Anvil were already throwing pigments around with their halfway decent rendition of this originally Spanish-hued Rolling Stones cover in “”Paint It Black””

=========================================
A very good album. I bought this album on the strength of the reviews of the film I saw in the national press. This is a band that never made the big time for whatever reason. Whilst they are not a Canadian Zep they are well worth listening to.

This album is a good buy for anyone who has an interest in good rock music. The music is good and the cover of “”Paint It Black”” is as good as any I have heard. Certainly they are no worse than any of, for example Uriah Heep’s albums or indeed any of the 80’s Sabbath or Purple Albums. I would recommend this band to anyone who likes good rock music. Their reputation as the real life “”Spinal Tap”” is ill deserved. Sit back, turn up the volume to 11 and enjoy. A good buy.”

Band:
Steve “Lips” Kudlow – Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar
Dave Allison – Guitar, Lead Vocals (“I Want You Both (With Me)”, “Bedroom Game”)
Ian Dickson – Bass
Robb Reiner – Drums

Producer: Anvil

Originally issued under the band’s original name, Lips, this is a great debut that mixes traditional heavy metal, New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and speed.

Hard ‘N’ Heavy (sporting one of the most METAL album covers of all-time) features the band sowing their oats with all kinds of horny & juvenile lyrics and song titles. I for one could not be more pleased!

I classify Anvil as pure heavy metal, but speed metal plays a part in their sound and its refreshing to hear that style of music coupled with lyrics base solely on sex instead of the usual death, politics, religion, end of the world lyrics that the genre typically deals with. What can I say? I’m a hair metal guy at heart and the best way to win me over with lyrics is to talk about a girl or two (together at once).

If you guessed “Paint It Black” is a Rolling Stones cover, you guessed right. Seems it is a cover favorite in the world of metal. Anvil’s take is really good cover, in my opinion. Speaking of covers, I think Anvil’s “Hot Child” which sounds a bit like “Rock Bottom”.

How could a debut this good in a decade so hellbent for metal not propel these guys to international stardom?

After listening to “Hard ‘N’ Heavy,” the debut album from Canadian metal outfit, Anvil and thinking back to the documentary made about them four years ago, I find myself asking, “Why didn’t they make it into the big time?” This album alone should have catapulted them into the stratosphere of music, it’s that good. My gut reaction is my belief that Canadian metal was largely ignored back then with the exceptions of Rush and Triumph but was that really the case? My mind is still grappling with the question but in any case, whenever any of the great metal albums from 1981 are mentioned, “Hard ‘N’ Heavy” definitely deserves to be among them.

If I still had one of those radio/cassette alarm clocks and had this album on cassette, then I would have would have woken up every morning to the opening track, “School Love” and not just because it starts with a school bell. I love what comes after, the killer sound of guitar, bass and drums that meld together to make the song. Of course, after “School Love” woke me up, I wouldn’t be able to do much else because I would have to head bang away through its entirety. What impresses me with many of the songs is that Steve ‘Lips’ Kudrow is a far better guitarist than what I have given him credit for. There are some killer solos on “Hard ‘N’ Heavy.” “AC/DC” (which is not a tribute to the band of the same name), “At the Apartment,” Oh Jane” and “Bondage” all immediately come to mind here.

What Anvil have done with “Paint It Black” on the album is something truly phenomenal. They just didn’t metalize the song, they ultra metalized it. Another aspect that the band has always done well in my mind is add a certain sense of humour to a lot of their songs. That humour is apparent in all of the songs here while all the time, taking nothing away from the style that makes Anvil a true metal band.

Anvil

Whoever first said that Anvil are the greatest band never to have had a break gets total agreement from me. I can only wonder why they didn’t make it to the great heights achieved by so many other bands in the 80s. “Hard ‘N’ Heavy” is a fantastic metal album and deserves its place among so many of the other great metal albums from 1981.
