Davy Vain made his name producing Bay Area thrashers Death Angel, but he had a glam metal heart. The debut album from his eponymous band deserved to be way bigger than it was: killer single Beat The Bullet and the title track imbued prime West Coast sleaze with dark San Francisco energy. The metal press fell hard for ’em, setting the singer up as a leather-trousered, barefooted pin-up. But the public proved resistant to the hard sell, and Vain were left sitting forlorn and alone on the sidewalk while lesser groups were whisked behind the velvet rope of fame.

The great Davy Vain is the most intense, sexual and glamorous icon of them all, and No Respect remains a magical moment, when the stars aligned for the Electric Warrior of the 80’s. No success, but definitive cult status: if some hair metal classics can sometimes be used shamelessly, this impossibly cool track is a perfect magnet for girls.

San Fransisco glamsters Vain had a minor hit with Beat the Bullet when they released this, their debut album, in 1989. Their teased hair look was pure glam, and singer Davy Vain had a swagger about him, and on top of that was a great songwriter. This is a seriously underrated album by a great band.

This is such a dark, sleazy album and compared to what sold in ’89, especially in states where these things matter – Poison, Winger etc. This is an adult exploration of love, life and relationships (often in it more seedy forms) compared to the more adolescent sexual innuendos and party rock of Warrant and their ilk. Also unlike many of their peers this is an album about sex rather than sexist party songs. I think the production is superb and the guitar is peerless in 80 sleaze rock. I think that unlike many of it contemporaries this album stands up well to the passage of years as it is not so obviously of it time. The band had been around for a few years, plugging themselves with several Demo`s and many sold out gigs around the bay area. Kerrang voted it in the top twenty albums of 89 and in the top five glam albums this year. This is the most amazing piece of glam rock you will ever hear and is an absolute must buy for all glamsters! Davey Vain voice is so sultry you can almost hear him pouting. From the pop like catchiness of ‘Watching You’ to the sleazy grinding guitars of ‘1000 degrees’ there is not a bad song on this glitter encrusted jewel of glam. Buy it & love it!!

Κλασική περίπτωση υποτιμημένου δίσκου. Από τις περιπτώσεις, μάλιστα, που σε κάνουν να απορείς για το πώς και ένα τέτοιο άλμπουμ δεν βρέθηκε ποτέ όχι μόνο στην κορυφή του κόσμου αλλά έστω σε ένα Top – 10 ρε αδερφέ! Μιλάμε για ασύλληπτα πράγματα! Γιατί το “No respect” δεν είναι δίσκος που μπορεί να γραφτεί από την οποιαδήποτε μπάντα, ούτε καν και από τους ίδιους τους VAIN.
Οι VAIN αν και είχαν σχηματιστεί από το 1985 κατάφεραν να κυκλοφορήσουν το εν λόγω ντεμπούτο μετά από τέσσερα χρόνια. Και τι ντεμπούτο ρε γαμώτο. Έχει μέσα τραγούδια όπως το “Secrets”, το “Beat the bullet”, το “Who’s watching you” και το “Ready” που σε κάνουν να κουνάς το κεφάλι και τα πόδια σου στο ρυθμό της μουσικής. Είναι τραγούδια – ύμνοι του hard rock, πραγματικά μνημεία όλα τους. Καθηλωτικά, χορευτικά, συναισθηματικά και ότι άλλο μπορεί να χωρέσει ανθρώπινος νους. Τι και αν ο δίσκος ξεκινάει με μια επιθετικότητα που δεν την περιμένεις και ξαφνιάζεσαι, το “Beat the bullet” είναι για πλάκα το καλύτερο τραγούδι για ραδιόφωνο που έχει ο δίσκος! Και πες εντάξει, όλα καλά μέχρι εδώ. Παρακάτω υπάρχουν τα “Aces” και “Laws against love” που έχουν και τα δύο καταπληκτικά ρεφραίν που σε καθηλώνουν με την πρώτη ακρόαση. Δεν μπορώ να κάνω track by track ανάλυση, δε γίνεται γιατί θα γίνω κουραστικός γράφοντας τη λέξη «Έπος» κάθε λίγο και λιγάκι.
Θεωρώ πως είναι σχεδόν εγκληματικό αυτό το άλμπουμ να θεωρείται τόσο υποτιμημένο. Σίγουρα υπάρχουν αρκετοί οι οποίοι το προσκυνούν σαν και του λόγου μου, δε χωράει αμφιβολία αυτό. Ακούστε τον δίσκο όλοι. Μιλάμε για ένα από τα κορυφαία άλμπουμ στην κατηγορία hard rock/poser/sleaze ή όπως αλλιώς λέγεται. Για μένα είναι στην πεντάδα. Υπερβολικός; Δε νομίζω! [Ντίνος Γανίτης]
