Description

Released on May 25, 1983, the album has been hailed by critics as Dio best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre. The album was eventually certified Gold in the US on September 12, 1984 and Platinum on March 21, 1989.
In the UK, it attained Silver certification (60,000 units sold) by the British Phonographic Industry, achieving this in January 1986, at the same time as The Last in Line.
The original vinyl release had a photo-montage LP-liner, with images from both Rainbow and Black Sabbath days.
The cover was controversial, featuring a devil killing a cleric. Dio was quick to argue that appearances are misleading, that it could just as easily be a priest killing a devil, wanting people not to “”judge a book by its cover.””
The demon-like monster is the band mascot known as “”Murray”” and is featured on several other Dio albums as well.

On IGN list of “”Top 25 Metal Albums””, Holy Diver was number 8, and this statement followed, “”It is one of metal best albums and it spawned two of the greatest metal songs of the 80s – “”Holy Diver”” and “”Rainbow in the Dark””. Featuring the underrated Vivian Campbell on guitar, this album showed that [Ronnie James] Dio could do it on his own””
Allmusic reviewer Eduardo Rivadavia praised the album, stating “”…aside from Ronnie unquestionably stellar songwriting, Holy Diver stunning quality and consistency owed much to his carefully chosen band mates, including powerhouse drummer (and fellow [Black] Sabbath survivor) Vinny Appice, veteran bassist Jimmy Bain, and a phenomenal find in young Irish guitarist Vivian Campbell, whose tastefully pyrotechnic leads helped make this the definitive Dio lineup. Holy Diver still the undisputed highlight of Dio career, and, indeed, one of the finest pure heavy metal albums of the 1980s.””

RIDE THE TIGER! YOU CAN SEE HIS STRIPES BUT YOU KNOW HE’S CLEAN
After breaking up with Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio employed the services of a fine young heavy metal guitarist named Vivian Campbell for his new band. He also brought along hard-hitting drummer Vinny Appice from Black Sabbath. The music they recorded together (along with bassist Jimmy Bain) resulted in the Holy Diver LP, a record now referred to as a classic by many a metal aficionado.
The style of music on Holy Diver is a very clean, very lean form of heavy metal. I think this has a lot to do with the recordings great instrument fidelity, the understated single guitar approach, Appice’s precise drumming (with great, authoritative, fills), and Dioâs crisp, commanding vocals. In many ways, Holy Diver is the quintessential traditional metal album. None of the many metal sub-genres really apply here. Holy Diver is one of those albums at the very sun-center of the heavy metal galaxy (of which all sub-genres orbit). And though accessible, it is not commercial. Any album with Stand Up And Shout, Holy Diver, and Rainbow In The Dark is absolutely essential. Arguably Dio’s finest hour.
My score: A

The Rainbow in the Dark music video was filmed close to the time of the original studio recording of the song. The video’s location takes place in central London, with scenes alternating between shots of a man following a woman through a street lined with pornographic cinemas, and Ronnie James Dio singing from a rooftop. The implied malicious intent of the man is made evident during the guitar solo, when guitarist Vivian Campbell (and later bassist Jimmy Bain) appear and effectively “scare” him away after he follows the woman into a movie house, with the woman kissing Campbell on the cheek in apparent gratitude. The video includes shots of tourist attractions such as Nelson’s Column, Westminster Bridge, Picadilly Circus, and Soho.
