EVIL LIVE, the 1994 release from U.K. metal group Diamond Head, features a slew of hard hitting tracks.

On June 5, 1993, Diamond Head filled the opening slot at a Megadeth/Metallica concert at Milton Keynes Bowl in the U.K. The recently re-formed band had just recorded its comeback effort, Death & Progress, and the band members were probably anxious to try out some new material in front of their biggest fans, Dave Mustaine and Lars Ulrich, not to mention a much larger audience than the group could attract on its own. That performance was recorded and released (along with some extra studio material from the Death & Progress sessions) a year later under the title Evil Live. The live set is sadly short on material from Diamond Heads debut that later became known as Lightning to the Nations or The White Album. “Lightning to the Nations” and “The Prince” are conspicuous in their absence, but thankfully “Am I Evil” kicks off the live set and “Helpless” closes things out. More than a couple interesting cover tunes populate the second half of Evil Live, with Montrose’s “Rock the Nation” standing out as a clear highlight. Throughout all 16 tracks of this disc, Brian Tatler’s guitar playing is first-rate, as is the vocal work of Sean Harris. These two influential but relatively unknown artists are among the finest in their respective positions of all who participated in the NWOBHM. Evil Live can be recommended solely based on the performances of these two hard rock virtuosos.

A must buy for Diamond Head fans.
this album is a must buy for the Diamond Head fan. The four found themselves facing a crowd of people who came there for Megadeth and Metallica: enough pressure to scare anybody, especially a band who had been inactive for some years. Yet they put out a very energetic performance, and the result is impressive in songs like Dust, To the Devil His Due, Run, and the classic Sucking My Love. The other songs were good too, and if you add the second cd (containing, for the most part, covers) which is very well performed and recorded, what you get is the photograph of a criminally underrated band who was trying both to break into new territories (from heavy metal to melodic hard rock) and to finally find an opportunity to get some recognition from the music crowd and business. The attempt failed again and DH got back into oblivion, but records like this make me wonder why. They were damn good!

Metallica’s – Garage Inc.  album came out in 1998 and sold over five million copies. It contains four Diamond Head songs, and the royalties have changed my life a lot [says Diamond Head’s Brian Tatler]. I bought a house with my wife, and the constant flow of royalties mean that I no longer have to work.

“In 1998, I was visiting our drummer Karl in San Francisco, and I got a call from Lars Ulrich, who invited us to come and visit him at The Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California, where Metallica were recording Garage Inc. Lars showed us around and treated us to a playback of It’s Electric, that they’d just recorded.

“Later on we drove back into San Francisco to celebrate, and l asked Lars how many copies the record would sell. And he said, ‘this is probably going to sell five million copies, based on the the last few. So the beers are on you!’

“To get four songs on a Metallica album… I’ve been very lucky there. It’s just the way it is. They did great versions of our songs. They are very tight and make it rock. They introduced Diamond Head to millions of American fans that didn’t know Diamond Head, because we had never toured the US back in the day.

“I sometimes think of some of the other NWOBHM bands that didn’t get covered. It could have been Angelwitch. It could have been Tygers Of Pan Tang. I’m just very lucky.”   [Diamond Head’s Brian Tatler]
